I am going to fit a new water softener outside, probably a clack.

What is normally used to protect them from the elements.

I am thinking a plastic storage container or making my own wooden cover from marine plywood.

    What are people having installed?

That little thing wouldn't hold much of a water softening system.

Would you not need a bigger one? Like the ones used to store wheelie bins?

I wouldn't think a water softener would do too well in the frost. I would put it indoors if it were possible at all.

I would insulated the container, I will have to weigh up my options.

    Mine is half in,half out!

The salt container is outside, but that's OK cos salt water has a lower freezing point so cold nights aren't an issue.

What's ideal is if you can find an old fridge somewhere like freecycle or adverts freebie section. Insulated already and easy to fit with a lock if needed.

An old fridge lying at your back door.

    That'll look classy!
