So what is the best new small car that can be got for under 20 thousand euro,s with a diesel engine?

All I can find are The Renault Clio Dynamique Nav dCi 90 MY18 1.5 dci,

    Hyundai i20 deluxe

    Seat Ibiza 1.6 TDi

    and maybe the Dacia Duster.

Also of them three cars which one would you like to do a lot of mileage in?

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

About 22k off the top if the OP means new cars!

Second hand, good shout. Drove a 162 GTD last year. Brilliant car.

The Clio is being replaced by a new model by the end of this year.

To be honest if your doing a lot of mileage then a small car primarily designed for city driving, is not really suitable. You will be in bits getting out of it after a very long drive.

Oh I know that. Surprised there is no special edition or run out edition of it yet just so they can sell all of the current model. I remember when Renault used to regularly to special editions of the Clio.

She had a back operation sometime ago which only made things worse. She has said there is no seat that is good for her now. So she has decided to do less driving but will still driving to different cities every so often.

Do you think a Daci Duster would be any better? It is a little over her 20k budget but if it was better maybe it would be worth her stretching to it even do she said she was not mad about them.

Not gone on the current gen VW engines. Water pump design is too idiotic for words. EGR valves, lambda sensors, diagnostic faults. The 1.9 TDI was near perfection for about 25 years so they went backwards. I'd go for something with the Peugeot 1.6 hdi, fortunately that means a lot of cars to pick from.

Don't buy new though, you're probably talking PCP but either way it doesnt and has never represented value.

Jesus. I wouldn’t say the 1.6 HDI in any iteration would be your current day 1.9 TDI

And the 1.6 HDI engine was retired about 3 or 4 years ago.

What will her estimated annual mileage be exactly? Driving to a city every so often doesn't sound as onerous as your first post.

A petrol would be quite often cheaper to buy which means more car for your buck. And smoother to drive....

The OP states that it's a company that's buying it so most likely it needs to be diesel to claim VAT back. You cannot claim VAT back on petrol.

The Blue HDi is only a tweak of the previous gen rather than a ground up redesign like VAG did though.

Didn't the capacity go from 1.6 to 1.5 though, that's more than a tweak.

Would agree with the poster above and say Ibiza or Polo, they're basically the same thing, probably the best bet. Decently specced one would come in around 20k.

Push the budget to a Golf Comfortline though if at all possible (25k list, haggle down a little). How will ownership work - can she add anything to it?

No idea. Will ask her at the weekend.

Ye thought about checking the Tipo out but Fiat are gone very scarce. Only seem to be one company in Dublin selling them now and no website at all for Fiat Ireland.
A big Citroen with pneumatic suspension is really what she needs I think.

Why sub 20k? if it is because of the BIK then why not look at electric with 0% BIK.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

You'd most likely get a run out Citroen C4 hatch hdi. There are still a few unregistered ones hanging about. Nice bit of comfort for the driving but old hat.

Yes it think that is the reason. She said the company was not sure about electric cars yet and something about insurance as well. A pity really.

Yes that would not be a bad car. Will have a look. Nice classy interior in them with decent materials.

If it’s a company car and not worried about resale the Tipo is a great option - much bigger than Polo and cheaper. I’m just back from Italy and rented a 1.6 diesel and was well impressed, I’d say it drove better than say an i30 or Ceed

Would you get a new diesel one hear do for less than 20k? Also why do Fiat sell the one with a crappy dash here when the one for other markets has a much nicer dash?

    Page 34 on this link
has the pricing , 1.3 diesel just below 20k, 1.6 (lot better) slightly over.

I am surprised that the saloon costs less than the hatchback. A 1.6 diesel saloon can be had for less than 20k which is very good. A nice looking saloon to. It is nicely specked a well. Not really anything that is standard on the lounge spec and not on the easy spec is needed.

I think the Lounge gets a bigger screen and Apple car play which works really well on it. Big discounts on these cars too - 4K scrappage and probably the same for a cash/ company buyer. Surprised they are not selling a bit better as they are great value for money, e.g I’d take one over a Duster all day long.

The 120bhp 1.6 is a strong engine too and only a grand dearer than the 1.3 too so that would be the one to go for.

With my lease company the biggest part of the lease charge was depreciation. A lot of the time it was better to order a more expensive "brand" car because they could resell it quicker and it would hold its value.

Of course the BIK was higher but you need to balance it out.

The ideal situation would be electric with low depreciation,

The OP quoted a purchase price of 20k as the maximum, so might be buying rather than leasing, but either way it sounds like they won’t allow say a 25k Golf even if the lease cost was lower than a 20k Tipo

The 20k price is because of BIK. Keep the OMV down so the BIK is not high. This was confirmed by the poster

If you discount BIK with 0% on electric then does the OP really need to keep below the 20k threshold?

I have never heard a company put a max value of 20k on a car. I get a max value of the monthly lease but not of the car itself.

OP any chance a car derived van suits her and the company?

    5% flat rate BIK.

    Golf, Kuga, Focus, I30, Ceed.....
