Motor tax question

    Hi,

I'm driving my brother's car (as a named driver) and the tax is up on it tomorrow. He lives in Wexford, but I am now driving this car in Mayo. Can I pay for his tax here in Mayo and get the new disc, or does it have to be in Wexford? He's out of the country for a while, so he can't do it from his end.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Pay it online. www.motortax.ie

You'll have approximately ten days' grace before you'll get into trouble.

You can tax online or at a tax office.
I have taxed it at tax office many times and not shown ID (I doubt it's even required)

I don't have the pin for that though. It's in my bro's house in Wexford and he's not in the country.

I'll try the local office here in Mayo.

Does anyone else have access? If you were to tax online the tax would go to his address also so maybe that wouldn't work at all.

Tax in tax office but I'm not sure possible with VLC registered in another county. I've never tried.

Are you sure about that 10 days grace? My brother will be back home in the second week of June so that 10 days would cover me, if I could wait till then.

Can you just click "forgot your pin" and use your email address for the pin to be emailed too?

The PIN is the last six characters of your vehicle's chassis number as printed on RF100 form. (For example, if your chassis number is KMHUD31LPXU478J27, your PIN is 478J27.)

If the address of the registered owner is Wexford then you can only tax it in the Wexford office.
Easier to tax it online, only problem will be the tax disc may be sent to the Wexford address.

If you don't have the renewal notice with the pin you can use the last few digits from the serial number on the registration document if you can get them. That explained on the mitor tax website.

At least it would be taxed. He can only be done for non-display after that.

AFAIK they will only accept an email address already given to them.....open to correction on that, but surely the OP can log in to his brothers email to retrieve the PIN.

edit: OP, any reason the Brother can't just do this online from wherever he is. The disc will go to his address but it's still the quickest and easiest solution

Only for the 1st time you tax it. You have the option to retrieve the PIN online, the OP should know the answers for their brothers details. Is it possible to change the postal address online? Otherwise it'll go to the wrong house.

When you tax in the MTO do they still check for insurance? If the OP is driving using the Driving other cars extension on their own policy will that work?

    Yes.

If you renew online, you can change the address where the disc will be posted - this doesn't affect the address on the reg cert.

Actually it does (I had this confirmed previously by Shannon), they simply don't send out a new VLC as you still hold the current one.

When you change the address online the registered vehicle owner address is also changed on the NVDF, however, you simply change it back upon next renewal.

If for example a FCPN is issued it will then be sent to whatever address was put in online as opposed to what is printed on the VLC you hold.

OP here. Thanks for all the replies.

I tried the local tax office here, but no good: it has to be done in Wexford. Also the insurance was up on the car today as well, but he renewed over the phone. I have email confirmation of this, but don't have the insurance disc until he is back in the country. Do you think I'd be okay driving for a couple of weeks without having tax nor the insurance disc on the car? I am covered by his policy, I just don't have the disc yet.

Would have made life simpler if he renewed the tax online (seeing as he did the Insurance renewal).
Obviously you can be done for no tax.....really depends on what, if any, Guard you meet.

Both are an offence of non display but most times if discretion is used you have 10 days to produce unless they believe it to be uninsured then they will lift it.

Isv here nobody that can access his house and post the documents to you?

I'm not sure, I'll ask him about that. Good idea!

    They are being pedantic.
We used only enforce that on the first time tax.

If you have the log book , the last 6 digits of the book number.
Just change the address when it appears on the screen.
Taxed mine last night as a new owner. Simple job.
