Just spotted the Dell Latitude 5490 for €789, allegedly reduce from €1444.61. Would this be a good buy for home laptop?

Depends entirely on the spec of the machine to be honest. It can be bought at that price normally, but at a very low spec. And it depends on what you want from the laptop.

I'll be using it mainly for browsing and a bit of excel from time to time. The one mentioned is I5 8 gb of ram bad 256 gb of SSD

What i5 processor? A link would be best really.

From what you've said, almost any laptop would suit your needs. Your usage is very basic.

    Think its this one:
    8th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-8250U
    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit English
    8GB
M.2 256GB PCIe NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive
    14.0-in. display

I wouldn't be sold on it for the price anyway.

Bear in mind that the Latitude is classed as a Business laptop, so the price of €789 is excluding VAT, so €970 including VAT...

For basics, this is a good deal. Can be delivered via DPD Parcel Wizard or equivalent.

solid specs for a home laptop - not aesthetically pleasing but has all the pieces to do a decent job.

although this offers better value for £350

    https://www.ebuyer.com/855754-lenovo-v330-14arr-ryzen-5-laptop-81b1001euk

    higher spec 4 core 2500u
    8gb ram
    256gb ssd
    neater and lighter 1.8kg unit
full hd screen - not sure how good it would be but prob ok

only downside is the smallish 30 watt hour battery. looking at 5 hours video playback type results I would say.

    very very good value really
