Hi folks. Im heading back to to NCT to get a visual retest on an indicator bulb however since the main test, I’ve gone and cracked my wing mirror glass. Am I likely to get a fail on this or will they just check the previous fault?

They only check the faults listed on the fail sheet.

To a certain extent. They will check all other bulbs to make sure you didn’t swap the bulbs around. Similar if missing a bit on a wheel etc

I cracked the windscreen between test and retest. The guy asked me at the retest when it happened and I told him after the last test. He told me it will fail next year and I should change it as soon as possible. Then he passed it and gave me my certificate.

No they won’t fail it, if you can park it in such a way as they can see the bulb working from the office , it’ll make it a shorter visit to the nct center.

Don’t think I’ll chance it, I’ll stick a cheap replacement on it

Definitely wont fail. They only re-check the failed item.

For this case I think you'll be fine.

Park the car at the nct centre with the wing mirrors folded in...then fix the glass in your own time

Definitely wont fail. They only re-check the failed item.

A re-test means a test carried out on a vehicle,
subsequent to the refusal of a test certificate in respect
    of that vehicle, where-
(a). the application for the retest is made not more than
21 days after the day on which the test certificate
    was first refused, and
(b). the test is carried out on a day which is not more
than 30 days after the day on which a test certificate
in respect of the vehicle was first refused.
In carrying out a re-test on a vehicle, only those items
which gave rise to the refusal of the Test certificate are
to be tested. The items which failed must be re-tested as
per the method of testing in the relevant section of the
    Manual.
If during a retest the tester notices any other obvious
defects, then the owner shall be notified and these
additional items tested. Where a reason for failure is
issued with respect to these additional test items, then
this will be recorded on the test report.

    This from NCT Manual.

Yeah and even that statement is fill of "if he notices", "obvious defects", "the owner will be notified (not re-failed)", "where a reason for failure is issued". There's more get out clauses than I can even think of a good pun for. I'm sure the tester will be happy not to notice this and even if he did, he doesn't have to issue a fail.

This statement is to cover themselves for liability if the tester noticed a safety critical defect upon retest that he cannot turn a blind eye to in a professional capacity like say a dangerously defective tyre, brake fluid leak, fire hazard or whatnot and the tester has to alert the owner for their safety and the safety of others.

It isn't for observation of a cracked wing mirror glass during a visual retest for an indicator bulb which is highly trivial stuff for them. The tester won't want the paperwork or hassle if nothing else. No way this will be a retest fail, won't happen.

The NCT manual is worded badly, during a re-test they can not by law re-test any other item, if however they notice a major or dangerous defect then they must refuse a new cert.

    Hi,
my car failed due to no wing mirror cover on it. Wing mirror works perfectly.
Proving impossible to find one unless i pay nearly €500 on a like for like basis...
Can i replace it with one that does not have an indicator on it to pass the resit?
    thanks
