Recommend me an EV

    Hi

Been reading through a lot of threads but not much better off as it’s a mind field of info.

Currently need a family car- have a Mitsubishi ASX at the moment. Looking to change to something with a bit more cabin room as just got an extended rear facing car seat for the little one and front passenger unless they are 4ft 😂
So.... I’d love an suv. I just love the extra height as I’m quite small. But an EV or hybrid seems to be the best option finance wise and future proofing for resell.

Currently my daily commute is 15-20km Monday to Friday and the odd trip at weekends ranging from 30km round trip to a family day our cross country. We have a second car but realistically it will be my car used as hassle swapping car seats etx.
Outlander looks good or am I missing something?
Prius and Ioniq look good too but I’m just really wanting an suv but could be persuaded if more practical.

Budget is roughly 20k ish but could stretch to 25 if I was to save in fuel costs.
Other half does 1000-12000km per week with 3 days of 30km round trips which is ridiculous fuel costs so he could be persuaded to take mine some days if cost effective for us. (Has point blank refuses to entertain driving a Prius if I got one 🙈😂)

Soo.. to summarize..mostly short trips, decent boot and cabin space a must. Any recommendations?

The Outlander PHEV (plug in hybrid) has a decent range on electric only. You will save a lot of money compared to diesel / petrol cars with all those trips <30km. You just plug the car in at home whenever you can. I presume you have a driveway?

You will save even more on a full EV, but you won't get a SUV / crossover unless you at least double your budget :)

I would suggest go test drive an Ioniq, just so you know what it feels like to drive a full EV and to see if it is big enough for your needs. The boot isn't that big.

Best of luck and keep us updated!

Outlander PHEV is the only one with budget as Unkel has said. Anything else bar a second-hand EV (Gen 1 & 1.5 Leaf, Ioniq at a push) is going to cost a lot more. You could try a Leaf and Ioniq all the same. Ioniq 28KwH is the most efficient for its price, but the Leaf 40KwH (€29k for SV) has a large boot and cabin, and is also somewhat raised for a hatch. Outlander might make a good transition SUV until more EV SUVs are on the market (currently E-Niro at 38k, Tesla Model Y and Audi eTron at nearly 100k....)

To give you options... You did mention you want SUV style so the only other one besides Outlander is the Niro PHEV.

It will easily cover your commute in EV mode, has the high driving position you’re after but it will stretch your budget.

Thanks all. Had a quick look at the leaf online but don’t think it would suit as a family car. Boot doesn’t look like it would suit an expanding family.

Wouldn’t have thought of the Kia niro. Looks promising. Would that give much better range thank the outlander? Ie is it with the extra few quid?

Do you need a car for a 15-20 km commute. Rotor you consider a bike , e-bike , e-scooter, bus, rail, etc ?

Can you clarify the others half’s mileage ?

1,000 to—12,000 per week? With only 3 days of 30km

I cycle 60km round trip daily. Only started mid 30’s after driving 60k+ each year

Unless you want the “little one” in the front shopping basket! ;)

Better range than outlander. Something like 30km vs 50km but since your commute is less than both you won’t save money on fuel between the two.

It just gives you a choice and choice is good! :)

    Niro boot is small

If you want to keep suv then option are very limited

Unfortunately a car is a necessity. We live in the west where bus services are non existent. With a young family, crèche drop offs, shopping and doggies a bike just wouldn’t cut it.
Sorry didn’t explain husbands mileage too good. 1000-1200 in total per week. 3 days he does round trips of approx 30km but other 3 days are round trips of 150km.
Suv would be ideal but a few of ye have mentioned the ioniq so will definitely have a look at that too to keep options open.
Large boot is needed though as with a double buggy and shopping and all the other hits kids need a small boot wouldn’t suffice.

    Thanks again all!

Ok so you have a second car which I guess is combustion engine so personally if I was you I would go BEV for one car and leave combustion engine for long trips.

That would mean you could reduce budget. Go for Leaf 30kWh, eGolf v1, Ioniq.....save a few quid.....for your type of driving carrying around and engine with fuel seems to defeat the purpose

Personally I have eGolf v1. I can get Out n About v4 Double in boot. Still have space for a few bags etc. Range is similar to Leaf 30kWh,Ioniq would be better but you will pay a good bit extra for it.

    Might be idea.

Don't discount the Leaf yet. It's actually MPV high, and the doors open wider than most cars, making accessing car seats much easier. Boot may not be the largest but it's not small either - it's pretty standard sized.

eGolf in your budget won't do the 150km trip and is the smallest of the three, so I would not bother going to check one out, although they are a great car

By all means go test an Ioniq and a new model Leaf. You won't be able to get one for your base budget of €20k, but you will for your stretched budget of €25k. Bring your buggy and your kids while testing. They could be too small, but who knows. You will save a lot of money in total cost of ownership in a full EV compared to a PHEV (or ICE)

You will probably find that as a two car household changing one car to EV, that both of you will want to use the EV all the time for various reasons, so you will save more money than you expect :)
