Personally I wouldn't be letting Halfords near my car, free or not!

Their check for aircon is to check the pressure levels on the low side port, but aircon charge is measured by weight not pressure (E.g. a car may take 700g of gas) the pressures change wildly depending on temp, humidity etc which is why they are not used as a measure for filling the system.

I do my own air con check, if its cold it works, if it's not cold it doesn't work.

What do you use to check?

ah, light dawns. I thought Halfords had find a way to con you putting free air in your tyres.

To check the air conditioning properly you would need to evacuate the refrigerant and weigh it and compare to the specs.

I suspect the reason Halfords has the free check so that they can sell you some condenser cleaning product "to get rid of contamination causing musty smell".

OP, do you think there is a problem with the aircon in your car?
    Is that why you're asking?
Or do you just want feedback on Halfords?

Lol, Halford's version of a pre NCT check. I wonder how many fail?

You need the staff to help you to pick an air freshener?

Tbh, you can use Halfords but it's better imo to get work done by local motor factors and mechanics.
Support your local shops, not UK chains.

Did it in Halfords last year (Limerick branch). Air con system wasn’t cooling the air at all in a car I bought, and it was very uncomfortable. They did the free check (simple pressure test), said the pressure was down. The guy said I could a chance refill, but if the system had a leak, it would be a waste of time and the €35 it cost back then (think it’s a but more expensive now), as the gas would just leak out again. It was a roasting day, and I said go on, we’ll give it a go. He put new gas in the system, and immediately I could feel the air cooling. I carry an air-con thermometer in the car now and check it every few weeks. It’s been consistently blowing at 4 degrees since the top up. Best €35 I ever spent on the car. YMMV.

The Halfords hate is tedious, and most lads repeating stories they read.

I had them do an AC check on the wife's last car, a 14 year old golf.
They topped it up, but because they couldn't get the temp to read below a certain temp they didn't charge me a penny. It was blowing very cold nonetheless.

My local Motorfactors wanted 70 euro for the charge kit.
They also charge double for Adblue.

I was going to echo the above, you can't really go wrong with the price they charge, it almost doesn't make sense to buy the can yourself, just let them top it up for virtually the same price.
