Hi, do myself and my boyfriend broke up about 3/4 months ago and at the time didn’t even think of applying for one parent payment but now I’m really struggling to make ends meet. He isn’t giving me anything at the moment towards my son and I am on no other social welfare payments. How difficult is this to apply for? And they also say that I can apply before seeking maintance but will have to after, what does this mean how long will I have before trying to get it?
In the application is also asks for his address, P60 and so on but I don’t have any of them so what do I do about this? Sorry for all the questions I’m just confused from it all

Start the claim immediately with social welfare, with what documents you have. Then seek the other documents.

Time-wise, I have no idea, but starting sooner rather than later is better. I get the impression that you won't receive payment for the time before your claim.

If you want, sit down with the likes of MABS or Citizens Information and they can go through things with you. Some information here: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/social_welfare_payments_to_families_and_children/one_parent_family_payment.html

Thanks I’m not looking for it before the claim, I’m just looking for it now because I’m very stuck! I don’t thunk you need many documents anyway but I just wouldn’t have the fathers ones

Ask him for the documents, if he says no just tell social welfare he is refusing to cooperate and let them chase him for the paperwork. I guarantee they will have seen this plenty of times before.

Will they put it through without the documents from him though? I’m going to be so stuck for money and he won’t give the documents!

They should do. A quick Google tells me there is a 5 week waiting period for one parent family. Apply for SWA if you need money soon and they will deduct it from your back money when it goes through.

Thanks so much for your help, I’m totally clueless with all this and there is so much info online it’s mind boggling

If you can tell them his name, Dob and a recent address they'll be able to find his PPSN and from that they can find out his income details if any.

As for maintenance, you're expected to make an attempt to make him pay it - but if he won't pay, Welfare will go after him.

How much would he be expected to pay? I don’t even know what amount I should be asking from him!

Hard to say - if he's a consultant surgeon or a plumber then the sky is the limit, but if he's an average wage earner then I'd start by looking for €60 a week.

If he's a dole bunny then SW may take something off his dole, I think.

This is from the Citizens Information site:-
    Liability to maintain family
Men and women are required, under the law, to pay maintenance to a dependent spouse, civil partner or former cohabitant and any dependent children who are not living with them. These people are called 'liable relatives'. If you are a liable relative and fail to pay enough maintenance to your ex-spouse, ex-civil partner or former cohabitant and dependent child(ren), you must contribute to the cost of the One-Parent Family Payment, which is paid to your family.

The Maintenance Recovery Unit of the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection will contact the liable relative if they have not paid enough maintenance. You can contact the Maintenance Recovery Unit on (071) 967 2599 for more information. You can also find out more about ‘Liability to Maintain Family’.
