I've been away for a few years. Returned last year & was added to my Dads policy for the rare occasssion I needed a car.

Now I do need a car... Have recieved shocking insurance quotes... less than 10 years ago, I used to pay €280, now I'm getting quoted €1400...

Need advice on a good car, that will represent the business I work for (creative), cheapish to maintain and goodish mileage... I also need recommendations for a broker of insurance company that has a reputation for getting quotes down. (I have 7 years no claims bonus un the UAE & 8 years before that in Ireland).

I'm budgeting about 5-7k on a car & considering Audi TT 2.0 TDI or Alfa 159 1.9 JTDM

A comprehensive policy has about 12 months of life after it finishes after which your at the zero point again.

Presumably the quote you got was for one of the cars listed. If so not too bad. I'd say you will have to lump it for the first few years and shop around aggressively each year to get the price down.

    The joys of motoring...

Thanks... seems like I'm at their mercy. Might just go for a 3 series or an A4 just to get the monthly down to something more paletable...

For insurance they won't accept any no claims from previous driving after 1-2 years depending on the company or from driving outside the country, you might get 1 years named driver no claims in some places so I would assume your insurance quotes would be quite high. In saying that I tried first Ireland broker when I started driving and they were half of all other insurance companies, the policy was underwritten by KennCo. Shop around, 1400 is not too bad for the cars mentioned.

You could get that down by going for a smaller car I reckon but you'd be sacrificing power and comfort.

Not too sure on the c30 but I've heard they are quite small and unpractical if you need back seats.

    Thanks, I'll look them up.

After an exhaustive search I think I found the car for me (for the moment). An Alfa Giulietta 2.0 TDM Veloce 140bhp. It's only €200 to tax, insurance is *okay & they are a reasonable spec for the age...

Now I just need to find one in my price range... Back seats aren't a priority... Two in front will be grand, I'll only take passengers in the back on the odd occassion.
