Hi guys, bit of a morbid one so apologises on that, when my father dies I am getting left the family farm. I know if I don't have the green cert I will have to pay a massive amount of tax on it. I am currently working full time, I am just wondering can I leave it until then. Is there any leeway or do I have to have the green cert completed before anything happens?

If you have to do it, you should start looking into where the closest venue to you is, and when does it start etc. Often you need to put your name on a waiting list and it could be another year before the course would start. It won't go out of date so better to have it done. Lots of people on the courses are working full time and manage to fit it in.

I’m nearly finished my Green Cert and had the last exams today, where one of the modules we were examined on was “Farm business and financial planning”. This covered Capital Acquisition Tax, Stamp Duty, etc. and how to ensure Revenue consider you as a farmer when you inherit the farm. It’s worth doing the Green Cert to find that out :-)

Lots of people on the course with me are working full-time as well.

As advised above, it’s probably better to find out now where your nearest course provider is, the timetable and if you can do it part-time, duration, costs, etc.

Do you have a degree from a non-agriculture course already? If so, there are some distance education options too.
