On Done Deal and others what's the advice when cars are shown without reg plates?

Instinct says steer clear. Is there any good reason for this shyness?

The Greenlight check would verify logbook was used when submitting the ad.

I wouldn't necessarily stay clear. Some people just have a misinformed opinion that they are exposing themselves to some sort of vulnerability by putting there reg online.

Try ask for it and see what they say if you are interested in the car.

lads with cheap cars have been known to look up a visually similar car on done deal with tax and nct and match the plates so they get past apr checks.
Its why while the no disc system might work in the UK it wont work here while plates are so easy to buy.

Yeah, I tend to give the benefit of the doubt on this and hiding the insurance disc etc, some people are genuinely doing it for noble reasons or what they believe to be noble reasons.

Fair enough for a private seller but a dealer should be more open.

Messaged one such dealer and he hasn't replied three days later.

But it's all public info.... People are too precious..

In saying that, if they wouldn't give me reg when I called so I could do a check, then it would be a definite no no. People being weird with photos you can deal with.

If it's a dealer, then the car may be an import and doesn't have an Irish reg and will be VRT'd upon sale.

There's no good reason, the people that do it are just intellectually challenged. Fortunately, when a person goes to the effort of concealing their reg number in an ad, nine times out of ten it will be visible in another picture or in the close-up one of the NCT/Tax discs.

Some people just do it....wouldnt matter to me if they hide it or not...if the car is good just buy it

Now if it is a UK import and they want to hide the original UK plate then I would be worried

Put my wife's last car up for sale on both DoneDeal and Adverts last year, and she insisted that I blur the reg plate in the photos. No good reason - she just somehow felt better that way. Had no problem in giving the number to anybody who rang or messaged us and asked for it.

Not seeing the reg number in a photo online wouldn't turn me off. However, if the seller refused to give it over the phone or similar, that would set alarm bells ringing all right. Would steer clear then.

    Steady on there.

Not everyone is as smart as PrettyBoy.

There are numerous reasons for a reg plate not being shown.

If you're interested in buying the car, just ring up and ask for the reg.

A lot of Irish people will relate to that. They don't want people to see their reg number but for the life of them can't give a single reason why. There are some special cases that believe that if the reg number is visible then every punter looking at it will be able to access the owners name, address, bank details, etc.

Can you give a few examples? Genuine question, as I always wonder about this - particularly when I see an ad with pictures clearly taken at the most ridiculous angles, cutting out half of the car itself in an obvious attempt to conceal the plate.

So - if it's a genuine car with no damage repair history or questionable mileage that can be found on a history check - what are some good reasons to hide the reg number?

To hide the history would be the first that springs to my mind.

As opposed to walking down the road and seeing a similar car?

You see it in the bad parking thread aswell that sometimes reg's are blanked for no reason in particular. It is mild tinfoil hat stuff
