I've been told by a guard the answer is yes but nobody gives a ****.

Also make sure they are put in the only permitted place the top left of each window as you are looking out of them. Driving with an L plate on the bonnet, boot, bumper or anywhere else is the same as driving without an L plate.

The Guard was wrong. There's legislation in the UK that they have to be removed if the vehicle is being driven by a full licence holder. All our legislation says is that they have to be displayed when a learner is driving, there's no mention for when they aren't driving.

Was it the same Guard who told you about permitted places to display them? They have to be displayed to the front and rear, where isn't stated.
