    Hey all,

Our 2004 Nissan Primera has in the past few months developed an awful lot of problems which mean that it really doesn't make sense to try to get it fixed. The issues include:
    1. Engine warning light due to worn catalytic converter
    2. Engine warning light previous for issue with timing belt. They replaced sensor and it was driving okay, but possibly issue is back again (random power drops)
    3. About half the time the car won't start as if the immobiliser is kicking in. Taking the key out and turning it upside down before putting it back in usually works though.
    4. Odd issues with gears, it feels like the gear stick no longer lines up correctly, so if I move from neutral in a staight line down I don't find 4th, I find nothing. It also was randomly popping out of gear into neutral while driving and became almost impossible to get into or (if you did manage to find it) our of reverse

The car is currently parked up off the road in my parent's house. We are in the market for a new car, but I was wondering if the Nissan holds any value at all at this stage? Or is it ready for the €40 you might get from scrapyard and nothing else?

You might get a few hundred for parts if stuck on Donedeal, but you will be dealing with a lot of dodgy characters in that price range. If you can drive it to an Authorised End of life facility you might get a few euro, if they collect you might need to pay.

A few of that year for sale

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars/Nissan/Primera?year_from=04&year_to=04&sort=price%20desc

One with an NCT for €750 odd

You could fix all those problems but the year is against it

Ya, that's what I feel too. Shame, it was a fab car until the last few months, we had it since 2014 and it cost either €1,000 or €2,000 (we can't remember for sure :o).

I scrapped my old focus a few years ago for €36, wonder if the heavier Nissan would get more now or less?

Get rid of it,no one will be remotely interested in a 2004 primers even for free, FYI I'm not being cruel but honest

Funny, chap I know just ditched the same model and year Primera with a multitude of problems, he just couldn't get it through the NCT. Not worth a cent of your money or a second of your time, I'd get rid.

Yes, they're a largely undesirable car, even if it was running ok.

Make this the opportunity to invest in a hybrid/electric car. They are proving themselves generally very reliable and enduring with no gears to wear out, very undemanding to drive, economical with fuel and road tax, and my own little Lexus hybrid with the Prius engine has been cheaper to insure too. The insurance companies favour new cars with all their up to date safety spec. The only thing against hybrids is that the big battery does take up boot space.
