Looking at buying a used car which has been imported from England, hes got the permanent export document and also the shipment document. He bought it from an auction house. It hasn't been vrt'd yet. Wondering what needs to be done to either get log book or to get it vrt'd.

To get it vrt'd you need the log book, no two ways about it. I'd be very wary

    Don't.

Simple as that. No it's or buts.

I registered my last car with just the export slip off the side of the registration document.

Think you need to apply for a replacement of the DVLA..

    Yes they would have

I’ve done it before with just a permanent export slip

Car could be stolen, won't be in sellers name, complete mess, car worth nothing here without v5.

Run away as fast as you can, you'll be stuck with a car that you don't fully own and can never register it.

If the seller has a genuine permanent export cert, the V5c (logbook) has been sent into the DVLA. No way of getting it back. But you can VRT the car using the export cert.

Is the seller a dealer or private punter? If the latter, check the date on the export cert as you'll get stung for penalties if the car's been here over 30 days.

A V5 is not proof of ownership of a car anyway, it says so in massive big letters across the very front page. It has a lot less value than an Irish logbook

An export cert is a perfectly acceptable substitute. If you can find out what auction he bought it from, pm me and I should be able to confirm whether it actually was (and when) if it was one of the big ones (BCA or Manaheim)

The DVLA are not issuing a Permanent Certificate of Export anymore to my knowledge.

Yeah, it’s probably going to be a few months old meaning there will be a u on the VRT

    Yes they would have

I’ve done it before with just a permanent export slip

How do they verify the VIN, the CO2 etc or do you mean a separate permanent export cert (which I think are no longer issues) as opposed to the tear off piece from V5C (what I assume you mean by slip).?

    THIS.

    You can't import without it.

This is a recent change so be wary.

The export cert can be accepted. But you're going to incur penalties to whatever date is on that export cert. They stopped printing them in February.

Because the export slip off the side of the V5 is not acceptable as a registration document. It's either the full original reg doc or cert of permanent export.

The export slip off the side of the V5 doesn't even have the VIN on it.

    You didn't.

I have been in touch with OP via PM anyway. When the seller gets back to him/her about where the car was sold from hopefully I’ll be able to offer some assistance. My worry would be however that the export slip is out of date and OP will incur late penalties

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Export slip is definitely not equivalent to the Certificate of Permanent Export (which cannot be obtained anymore, according to reports).

What are you on about? Im calling him out on his wrong information. You cant register a car with that slip from the side of the V5. If any of ye know anything about registering cars you know he's wrong, but suddenly im what's wrong with boards? Stop it would ya.

Update: the seller is going to vrt it and then sell it to me, I had a dealership friend call the vrt office and they said export slip would be accepted

The cert of permanent export will be accepted, not the export slip

Hi, bought a car(cat N run & drive) from UK auction not being aware about recent changes. Car has been transported to Ireland last weekend and I called DVLA today- surprise for me…– DVLA are not issuing a Permanent Certificate of Export any longer…
I’ve heard some people in Ireland were able to get it done with following work around: ask someone leaving in UK to act as a buyer of the car without V5 and request replacement for V5. I am not sure how (if) it works? My mate from UK offered me a help but apparently I don’t know where to start. I have a proof or purchase from copart auction on my name- do I need to officially “sell” him this car so he can request V5 replacement? I am really stuck and any constructive tips will be really appreciated!
    THX!
