Seen on Subaru Irelands website they did a upgrade to the Outback in mid to late 2018

I've also seen they are introducing a brand new Outback in 2020 to b released in latter part of 2019

Any reason for such a facelift and upgrade so late in the 4th generation model?

ANy idea what kind of engine choice will be in the new 2020 model ?

The 2020 model will have their new mild hybrid 2 litre petrol engine. A facelift might have come due to dwindling sales and the new model not ready yet, so just tiding them over. The whole diesel saga and real life consumption measuring might have caused an interruption to their expected life-cycle, hence a late face-lift.
A 2020 Outback would very likely be a decent car that should last you a long time.

I thought I read somewhere they was a hybrid but couldn't get much info on it

Will it be the boxer engine still? I'm guessing they'll use or be taking Toyotas hybrid technology which is tried & tested

Yep, boxer engine. Don't know how much of Toyota's tech they'll use, as it's a slightly different direction they're going with it. It certainly won't be a copy-paste effort.
