New mysterious noise

    Hi all,

Another mysterious noise has presented itself on my car. Basically when driving off in 1st, 2nd, 3rd up until 2500 revs, a loud raspy noise is heard, like something is vibrating.

Checked the exhaust and heat shields which all seem fine.

It also does it when I leave out the clutch to the biting point and hold it.

I've linked a video, apologies if it isn't as clear, but the noise can be heard at 9 seconds and 16 seconds in.

    https://youtu.be/ca4a2eO9_nU

Planning on taking it to a garage but just said I'd throw it up here first to see what ye might think it is.

    Any help appreciated!

Sounds like the bearing has gone on one of the pulleys.

You can check by removing the belt and spinning the pulley whilst listening for a rumbling noise. OR you might be able to find it by looking into the engine bay when it is idling.

I originally thought that too and upon further inspection the noise is coming from under the car not the engine bay.

I will however double check the pulleys tomorrow to rule them out.

The noise seems to be coming from around the DPF area of the exhaust, there is a heat shield above it which I checked and was solid, but I'll get the car on jack stands tomorrow and have a proper look.

    Another update:

The noise is only happening once the car is up to operating temp. Drove it for about 10 mins from cold today and no noise and then after 10 mins the noise came back.

Checked all heat shields, exhaust etc... Nothing loose or out of place/missing.

    Case closed folks,

Ended up checking out the passenger side of the engine, removed the air filter housing and low and behold a hidden heat shield.

The heat shield wasn't loose, but was bent down and was close to the frame. A rock or something must have hit it knocked it out of shape.

Bent it back and went for a long drive, peace and quiet has been restored! (Well, diesel peace and quiet :pac: )

I also checked my heat shields etc , and it turned out to be one of the bolts v loose hoping on the heat shield was causing the tinny, rattling noise

I’d something similar; a software dpf regen on the driveway (ok 4 of them) melted some underseal and a small heat shield completely detached, looks to have had plastic rivuts.
    Proper metals ones now.
