Hi, I'm selling a VW Passat 1.9 tdi. 154kms approx on the clock. I have a buyer set up and willing to purchase the car. The timing belt will need to be replaced. If I have my mechanic change the belt, car serviced etc, what is the best price I could get when it comes to making the deal? It's a diesel. saloon. Prices vary on other websites so any advice would be great. Thanks. AnSpinc

Got the timing belt & water pump done on my Audi A3 (same 1.9tdi engine) last year, think it was around €350.

Service can vary depending on what needs to be done. I think it was around €200 - €250 on mine.

Apologies for the lack of clarity. I'm looking to find the value of the car without replacing the timing belt.

    Sorry!

What year is the car, spec, nct, tax?

2008, 1.9 tdi, nct 12/19, road tax renewed for next 3 months

I'd firstly be wary of how "set up" your buyer is if you haven't agreed a price with them.

The general rule with these things, which is particularly prevalent with older cars is you will not get a return of your investment in the cost of servicing when it comes to the sale.

For example, if the car is worth €2000, and you need to spend €500 on a timing belt replacement and service, that wont value the car at €3000 when you're finished, in fact it doesn't even make it a €2500 car. It makes it a €2100 to €2200 car. If it's a €2000 car and it needs €500 worth of work, the best thing to do is sell it for €1800 and let the new owner do what they want.

To answer your question more specifically you could give us the age of the car, its general condition, has it a service history, how many owners, is it NCT'd, taxed or anything else. Although even after going through all that, I suspect the answer will be the same.

I think you would be doing well getting 1.5k. I'd mark it at 2k and then be prepared to negotiate

I’d second that on not doing the work. I made that mistake in the past when I was selling my wife’s fiesta we had replaced the timing belt, full service and four new tyres a few months beforehand. It made the car much more attractive to buyers and I had it sold in no time but you simply don’t get the value back in the sale price.

Is it post July 2008? If so " cheaper" tax and is definitely worth more than 1500. I'd say around 2500/3000 especially with only 154k Kms.

Considering its in the cheaper tax bracket and has tax, nct and low mileage, I'd try get decent pictures of it and put it on Donedeal for €3,000. See what kind of offers you get from there.

What spec is it, or what extras does the car have? If its a high spec car (i.e. cruise control, leather interior, fog lights etc) I could imagine it getting the €3,000. If its just a basic spec one then maybe €2,500.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Sorry biko for misposting.

Further details: lower tax bracket. one previous owner. It has a full service history.

I had previously researched prices on done deal. I was hoping to get at least €3k for it. I will get the car serviced myself before I sell. Am I being realistic looking for €3k if new owner has to replace fan belt?

It doesn’t make any difference if it’s pre or post July. All pre July 08s got the emissions tax on renewal of first tax once the rate was lower than it was on cc.

I'd not bother doing anything to it for the following reasons...
    • buyer may back out.
    • buyer may want main dealer to fit timing belt and nothing else will satisfy them.
    • buyer may prefer to take their chances on the car and run it cheap playing timing belt roulette.

Better to tell buyer car was last serviced on x and x work was done, timing belt is due at x, let them sort it out.
