Car leaking oil

Hi any thoughts on what the price of this may be would be appreciated. I noticed a small patch of what I think was oil under my car last week so on Friday I booked it in and got a service done and 4 new tyres. Yesterday and today I notice and had a guy in the supermarket car park approach me especially to tell me I was leaking oil. I'm annoyed with myself that I totally forgot to say it to the garage when I left the car in.
Any ideas on what I might expect this to cost?

Depends on where the oil is coming out, and whether it's oil or another fluid - get it looked at but ask for diagnosis and costing before doing work. Meanwhile dip it and top up the oil if it's below recommended level.

Is there oil on the ground from where you park the car each day? Is it possible the guy in the supermarket car park was seeing the output from your car's AC?

SBS thanks for replying.its coming out in the middle of the front of the car. My friends husband did say it was definitely oil (he's not a mechanic, was just being helpful).
I dipped it this morning and it's still at full level, I will check again in the morning before I drive it to the garage.

Atlantic Dawn thanks too but I think it's definitely oil. Car doesn't have air con it's just a basic model.

Can't be leaking much oil so. The front of the car sounds more like a crack in the radiator or pipes going to it.

Leave some newspaper under the car overnight and you will see where it is dropping from.

Check the power steering and brake fluid levels as well.

Not necessarily, could be a cracked rubber tube, cheap easy fix.

You need to get it identified ASAP....Any leaking liquids in any car is serious . And some are more serious than others..but they all need urgent attention. Are there any warning lights coming on in the dash?

Jmreire I will indeed get it looked at first thing. I was just wondering how much to expect it to cost but I realise nobody can tell me that until its looked at.
No theres no warning lights coming onon the dash but since yesterday I check the oil level before I start the car to be safe.

You haven't told us what car or engine it is. If you drive a Ferrari I'd imagine it'd be expensive no matter what it is. If it's an Octavia, maybe not so much.

Who normally does your servicing? Why don't you take it to him? Just ask to get the leak check, and report on what it would cost to fix? Make it clear though, that you want to decide on what you want to do after a quote has been given. If Its really losing a lot of fluid...should be pretty easy to spot. Good Luck with it.

Jmreire thanks that's exactly what I will do. It was only serviced two days ago so hopefully if it was anything big they would have noticed it then. Thanks everyone.

Try running the engine for a few minutes, then have a look under the bonnet. The source of the leak might become apparent when there's pressure in the system.

I had a leak from an oil pressure switch that only dripped when the engine was running.

Also ask the mechanic did it take much oil when it was serviced.

The mechanic should be changing the oil not topping it up.

    True.

Maybe ask him did he look at the level before he drained it.

It only take a tiny leak of oil to make a stain, not usually enough to drop the level in the engine to any significant level.

Impossible to say how much until you know what the problem is.

My own jeep has developed a leak behind the flywheel, it’s a massive job to repair so I’ll probably just suffer on and trade it on with the leak. It’s more a nuisance than anything.

If it has the manual gearbox, and the oil gets on the clutch plate, it will start to slip,,,and then the box will have to be removed anyway to replace the clutch. How much is it actually leaking? How often do you have to top it up?

Thanks so much to everyone for the advice. I brought it back to the garage this morning and he said it was just a seal/washer . He fixed it while I waited and wouldn't take any money. I'm delighted I thought it would be a big thing
