My sister in law is selling her 2008 318i petrol (2L) with 60,000 miles on it. It was a diplomatic car and she bought it from Frank Keane with a full BMW service history and then continued the service history with Keanes. It's a manual gearbox and the interior is full leather (unmarked) . Last week the dash lit up and as a result the timing chain is being replaced as I type. She is offering it to me for €2,000 including the timing chain replacement. Any comments on price etc ? ?

Sounds on par or lower than average for year.

If there are no issues after the new chain is fitted then it's worth a punt at 2k imo. Had she had any other issues with it? BMW petrol engine of that vintage were known to go through injectors and coil packs frequently. Replacement coil packs were cheap enough but injectors are not cheap.

No issues in 4 years of ownership. The mechanic fixing it is a friend of ours and wont let me buy it if anything is wrong. It seems like a lot of car for little money. I do 90% of my commute on a motorbike so it's just going to be a second car.

Current owner of a 2009 one for less than a year & have had nothing but problems. Coil packs & plugs are cheap & can be done DIY relatively easily.

Injectors tend to **** themselves around the 70k mark if they haven't been done before. 4 of them will set you back about €1k. Catalytic converters are good for about 100k but after that you're looking at €2k for a new one. Will go sooner if you're doing lots of start/stop driving which will cause carbon build-up. O2 sensors fail regularly too. It's direct injection, so it's a car built for long motorway drive's.

Not a car I'd recommend tbh,but if it's €2k you would nearly want double that in contingency for trouble free motoring if you plan on keeping it for a few years.
