The selflessness of these women, who are foregoing the chance to have a family is to be applauded. Genuinely, I don't think I've ever heard of people being so committed to something before.

Almost a pity they won't have any descendants to carry on those good genes ;-)

Selfless? More like senseless. The one's who care about the environment will have no children to care for the Earth. Great strategy.

If all women acted so responsibly who would pay their pensions and look after them in old age?

Less children on the earth is the point. I doubt caring for the environment is hereditary.

Other people's kids who pay tax and work as carers. We won't die out as a species because a few women don't have kids.

So you're saying we should sterilize people who are anti environment?

I'm all for that. I can think of a few people who should become eunuchs.

But he said all women. So in that case the human race would die out. Planet would probably be better for it too.

It's a slippery slope argument at its heart. Some women do this but what if all people do this. If all people doing this is wrong then so is some people doing it.

I'm amazed by some poster's ability to bring Margaret Cash into almost any thread.

Making a virtue out of copping out on living life.

I feel sad for them, hiding from life, whatever excuse they give is immaterial.

    I wouldn't bet on it.
The ratio of workers to pensioners is set to fall from 5:1 today to 2:1 by 2050, and this is compounded by the country's low level of pension coverage.
Ideas like this will accelerate these projections.

I did somehow miss the "all" part.

I never got this argument. Does that mean we should just keep expanding our population indefinitely?
Maybe at some stage if population reduction becomes policy (it won't, war and famine will reduce the numbers eventually) some older people mightn't have that many people to look after them. So be it, hardship is part of life.
I often wonder how this country ever got through the emergency and other times of strife.

Careful now. If she is mentioned 3 times in any thread the 3rd person to do so becomes pregnant instantly.

Whatever about these folks and their aims, the stark fertility differential between non-engaging welfare classes and working tax-paying people is going to make whole swathes of our country into a dysfunctional hell in 30 years time.

. I doubt caring for the environment is hereditary.

I'm referring to nurture not nature. Those who care about the environment are more likely to pass that on to their children. But I'm sure you know that.

It just seems a bit pointless. It literally won't make any difference. If they don't want kids anyway , fair enough. But if they are denying themselves happiness to be martyrs then it's a bit stupid really. People all around the world will continue to have multiple children, and many of those women don't have much choice in the matter. it's only in the west that birth rates are falling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,802 ✭✭✭✭suicide_circus

the question is, what percentage of these people would have chosen to be child-free anyway and are just putting this label on it?

Ah sure don't worry. In 30 years time rising sea-levels will drown most of them, and drought will starve any survivors.

Meanwhile the Bourgeoisie will have occupied any remaining High Ground, both moral and geographical, so some of the Middle Classes will survive to raise awareness, and taxes, and work another day.

In most cases it's working and/or educated women who are forgoing rearing kids, while the worst types of wasters are breeding like rabbits. This can only be to the detriment of society
and the tax base in the long run.

Those are exactly the women who should be having kids. It's not people who actually care about the planet that are the problem.

I've been saying this for a long time, humans badly need to try and de-populate, and shrink the size of future generations, ballooning worldwide population during the 20th century has been an absolute disaster.
