Folks, going to have a look at one of these cars on Thursday evening.

Apart from the usual caveats when buying used, is there anything specific for this mk or model that I should be on the lookout for.

    Thanks in advance

There are a lot of bad things said about a particular variant of the 1.9 in the Superb (engine code BXE) as they have an issue with engine bearings. There are other engine codes with this flaw but I think BXE is the most common to be fitted to mk2 Superb. I’d be checking the engine code in advance of seeing it.

Check the emissions cheat has been sorted.

Check the emissions cheat has been sorted.

Did that apply to the 1.9?
Also I’d prefer it hasn’t been ‘sorted’ if I was buying :)

Check the emissions cheat has been sorted.

a 1.9 BXE, or any VAG 1.9 diesel engine for that matter isn't involved in the emissions debacle.

I think the Superb Mk2 didn't have any EA189 engines until 2010, when it got the 1.6 and 2.0, same as most other stuff. I'd be careful with late reg'd 2009 cars if you are looking out for the emissions update encase someone is advertising a 1.9 as a 2.0 or vice versa, there may be some cross over.

It's a Jan reg from what I can tell.

Re checking the engine code before viewing, presume it's a case of asking the owner for it, or can I find that using the reg number

There will be a sticker like this in the front page of the service book (did Skodas have service books then?) and also under the boot carpet in the spare wheel well.

This example is a BAP, the problem engine as Colm says is a BXE, and if you end up looking at emissions update cars, the ones to look for are CAY* 1.6's and CF** or CM** 2.0's.

Thanks Toyotafanboi, it was more to see if I could find the engine code before viewing

And if it has leave it there.
Dont think the 1.9 needed the fix:).

They were registering 1.9 Superbs right up to March 2011.

So, looking around various corners of the interwebz, there seems to be some differing views about just how bad the issues with the bxe engine actually we're.

There were definitely problems with some cars, but a range of suggestions have been made re the reason, including things like the extended service interval in conjunction with incompatible driving (i.e. short twin/city driving).

Given that up to this point I've only ever owned petrol engines cars, would 15,000 miles a year be considered 'adequate' mileage on a diesel engine?

more to do with the type of trips than cumulative milage.
If all you are doing in the car is short hop stuff, then stick with petrol. If you're regularly doing longer distance journeys, then diesel will be more suitable. That is my understanding of it anyhow.....

    Cletus,

Maybe someone can comment if 1.9TDI BXE in the superb would have the same issue with ABS/EPS pump that I had in an 08 1.9TDI Touran with BXE. Known issue.

Thanks for that. Did you hold onto the Touran for long after that? Any other issues?

Given that it was 8 years ago, I'd be somewhat hopeful that the abs issue would have raised its head and been sorted at this stage, but maybe not.

Sorry for all the posts here, but trading up from a 04 petrol corolla, and would prefer to stay petrol really, but budget and time constraints are pushing me towards a diesel engine, but there doesn't seem to be one in my price range that doesn't have an issue of some discription, so trying to take the car on its merits

Still have the touran no major issues, except it being a boring box! When I reread my post it was the lateral accelerator sensor than was the actual issue.
