    Hi

Bought an 07 MK5 GTI 6 months ago with the standard monza type alloys.

Have no intention of putting money into it as it's a 2nd car and a runabout really.

The alloys are awful though- whiteworm running through them and visible even from a distance.

Diamond cut expensive and seemingly whiteworm can come back. Powder coat a little cheaper but still more money than I want to put into it.

I guess other options are buy a cheapish second hand set if I can source, fix up myself (sand, lacquer, i imagine a lot of work and I ain't the best handyman!) or any other cheap options?

    Doesn't have to be perfect.

I've sprayed before, you'd want to have plenty of time and patience. And ideally another set of wheels! Refurbs cost more than second hand alloys.

Keep an eye on done deal, adverts etc for second hand alloys. Even if you don't get a full set in one go.

    Thanks a mill.

Yeah I'm thinking I'm a tad lazy/busy to go down the DIY route so a 2nd hand set sounds bet.

    More stooopid questions though!

Is there a particular fitment I need for the MK5 golf GTI? Would like the standard GTI alloys but imagine I could find something generic 2nd hand cheap enough too.

And if I only get the alloys (or the tyres aren't as good as my current) imagine I just go to a tyre shop to get them fitted, shouldn't cost too much?

    Thanks again

I think all golfs (and VW's in general) would have the same fitment. You can confirm here.

    https://www.wheelfitment.eu/car/Volkswagen.html

I checked a golf cs passast, and they came out the same. People are always robbing them, so I think they are pretty interchangeable!

Any tyre shop would swap over and balance the tyres for a small fee.

What about that plasti dip stuff. Never used it myself but seems durable enough

It looks good, but i'd be concerned about tyre changes. It would probably look pretty flat too. You trying for silver, or black? I'd chance it if it was going black. You need a fair few cans of that too, and it's not available here in all the colours I'd like to try! (I think anthracite looked nice)

save yourself the hassle and get them powered coated for 400e.
By the time you buy a cheap set and swap the tyres over you'll be spending 400+ anyway.
+ aftermarket wheels will make it 10 times harder to sell.
