Government body - pre employment medicals...

Okay, so I could be doing a medical for a government position in the next few weeks. The position is for taking calls -extremely high volumes without going in to too much detail.

I’ve been working there already for 8 months through a recruitment agency, but hoping to go permanent with the company themselves.

However I’m 80% deaf in one ear and extremely worried if this means I won’t be accepted when I have the hearing test. I’ve been in the same position doing the job until now fine.

Anyone any thoughts? Should I start looking for jobs elsewhere!! :(

Don't quote me on this as I don't can't answer with specifics about medical tests etc. But what I will say is that employment legaislation for people with disabilities is quite good. Since you have been doing the job without any issues (I'm assuming anyway) I would be quite surprised if they could exclude you based on your hearing.

Has your hearing affected you in anyway doing the job?

    Thank you for your reply!

It hasn’t all too much as I wear a headset in work but it does when colleagues are talking around me I don’t hear them unless there talking loud!

I’m used to only using one ear to listen in to as I’ve been like this for the last 25years since I was a small child.

Just worried now with having to do a medical!

Do you not wear a hearing aid? If not, is there a reason?

It shouldn't effect your chances, they will take people with medical conditions a lot lot worse than been a little hard of hearing on one side. The fact your already doing it will 100% stand to you.

Was in the same position a few years ago with the local council. Except I wasnt aware of the poor hearing in one ear. I told the lady who did the test that it had never impacted my day to day work and that I really needed thr job. They still offered me the job.
