Can I import a baseball bat from the US or Europe?

Before anyone says it, no I’m not looking to use it as a weapon. I’m a big baseball fan and I recently saw a game-used bat used by one of my favourite players on eBay. I’m just asking are there any laws that I’d be breaking by ordering it, or would customs hold onto it? If anyone could help I’d be grateful. Thanks.

I'm no lawyer but they are for sale in sports shops here so wouldn't see an issue tbh

I brought a louisville slugger on a plane with me as hand luggage coming from Florida about 3 years after 9/11. Can't imagine why one would get stopped in the post. Sure it's just like buying a hurley.

Off course you can, why would think you couldn’t.

Hurley are much more dangerous. As are other sports equipment like javelins, now and arrows.

Like above I bought in a lovely Louisville slugger.

Brought home a steel one in 2002 from US.

Argos sell them openly both wood and aluminium, should be no issue at all.

Bringing it on a plane as hand luggage would be another issue.

I brought one home once in checked-in luggage. Wouldn't have expected it to be let through as hand luggage! Anyway, see no reason why you shouldn't be allowed to buy one online. Good luck with the bidding.

Mind me asking who the player is? Still a bit of a baseball fan myself. Don't worry, I won't bid against you....!

Assuming you are ordering it from the US then you may need to pay duty on it when it enters the country, and it could be held at customs until you do so.

It’s just a bat used by a former Blue Jays player: John Olerud. When I got into baseball a friend showed him to me and have just been watching clips of his ever since. There’s no chance of you winning a bidding war over it because the seller has it as Buy Now.

What you said about bringing it on as hand luggage could be useful if I’m ever in the US. Thanks.

I remember Olerud well – it’s actually through the Blue Jays around that time that I got interested in baseball in the first place.

Spent a year with relations close to Toronto around 1991/92, and was back for six months in ’93 as well. Went to a good few games around that time, including some of the playoffs in ’93 (wasn’t at any of the World Series ones though!).

Think ’93 was the year that Olerud averaged around .400 for much of the season, before dropping short towards the end?

And another thing…trying to follow baseball in those pre-internet days was a hell of a lot more difficult than it is today!

Used to buy the ‘USA Today’ newspaper every week or so, just to see the standings. And then there was US Armed Forces Radio, on something like 750 MHz medium wave and broadcasting from Germany, if you wanted to listen to a game live and were willing to put up with all the crackling and the signal fading in and out. Took dedication all right!

There should be no inhibition on the importation of a baseball bat.
You would be importing it legitimately as a piece of sports equipment.

You mention the issue of a weapon.
In law, virtually anything can actually be used as a weapon.
What matters is the specific context of any incident.

I use my cricket bat to hit a ball. My bat is a piece of sports equipment.
I use my cricket bat to hit you over the head. My bat is now a weapon.
