Where to get BMW 320D F30 remap?

Could anyone recommend a reliable specialist for a remap. I have a 2012 320d (f30). I've been very tempted to buy a new car this year, but I think I may wait for a 1 year old new model 330e or 330d. A remap will tide me over I think.

Joe Power based in Monasterevin: https://www.facebook.com/TDRIreland/

He has done a good few cars for me over the years.

JTK remapping did my wife’s 320D and did a great job.

Thanks guys, do any of these people have dyno's, I would like to see the before and after.

Yes, but I have no idea what part of the country you are living to suggest.

You can do it yourself with Superchips using their Bluefin tool.
The benefit is that you can also always switch back & forth between standard & remap.
Takes it from 181Bhp to 226Bhp.

    https://www.mybluefin.co.uk/search?make=3&fueltype=2&model=32&variant=2929

The question though is if you've had the timing chain replaced on it?

I live in Co Dublin, I don't mind travelling for this either.

Wandererz, i have about 120k km's on the car, and the chain definitely has not been done. I own the car since it was about 6 months old.

Is that device going to do exactly what the tuners would do anyway?

I guess my home town would be too far for you then.
    Fermoy, Co.Cork.

There is a local place here that did my sons E60 for him a few years back and it transformed the car. ( M47 engine 520D )

    They also use a dyno.

    As for the Bluefin system.
All the ford drivers in the UK swear by it.
Other than that I have no info on them.

I know I didn’t for my wife’s car due to time constraints but I’d go to Joe Power as he puts the car on a dyno before and after and I’ve only every heard positive reports about his work.

Is that model subject to the timing chain problem & recalll? Is it an N47?
I'd suggest that you get the timing chain done before messing with a remap. Check with BMW if it is subject to the recall. You should have received a recall letter though.

Regarding Superchips, they are well known for tuning & chip manufacturer. I don't know if it's still the case, but certainly 10 years ago one could order a Golf RS32 and others with a Superchips ECU installed directly from the factory from new (in SA). So they are well respected.

The Bluefin does not replace your ECU but rewrites the mapping. They have done hundreds/thousands of cars, so have a good base to start from. It does not go to the extremes where there is the potential to do damage to the car but works within manufacturer norms.
I'd say that the 45hp they quote is going to be close or near enough to whatever a tuner can deliver.

A tuner would be able to tweak the tune, dyno & tweak and repeat. You would also know how much hp you actually have to the wheels.

Anyone that cannot dyno & manually tweak the tune should be avoided because all they do is upload your map to Germany or elsewhere, someone else replaces or tweaks your map & posts it back.

In that case Superchips Bluefin is a better option, as that's what they do & you always can switch between original & remap as they are both stored on the Bluefin handheld module.

My 06 320D 163hp is quoted as 33hp more (196hp). It certainly feels more lively and has better power through the ranges.

Before mapping though, do get a full service done, clean out the EGR valve & perhaps get a Terraclean done.

Similar results to what my son got on his E60
Though he got swirl flaps removed - egr blank - dpf removal.
Standard it was around 154 bhp and 230 Lb/ft torque
after it was 199.6 bhp and 300 lb/ft torque.
    And was more economical.

Oh yes. Thanks for the reminder.
I removed the swirl flaps & changed the Vortex filter at the same time. No dpf on my model to worry about (M57).

I guess the point being that if you are going to remap then prior to that, make sure that you take care of the stuff that can go wrong under normal circumstances and to maximise the output.

    So:
Timing Chain - get it changed, especially if affected by the recall or susceptible to failure.
    Swirl Flaps - remove
    Vortex Filter - replace
    EGR - clean
    Intake Manifold - clean
    Oil - replace
    Airfilter - replace

Tuning has zero affect on the chain.....according to Joe Power. I contacted him about getting my old 525d tuned a few years back and aired the same concerns. I queried turbos and the timing chain. He said increasing the bhp will not cause either to fail. If the chain goes, it would have done so without a tune up.

I wouldn't even go near those things.
If you're going to do it then do it right.

For the uninitiated & great unwashed,

    How is it done right?
    What's the difference?
    What's involved?
    What's changed?
    How long does it take?
    How much does it cost?
Where's best to get it done?
What happens if the remap needs to be reversed? Does it cost more?

One-liners are sound great, but not much use with no elaboration.

I would rather trust a company with 30+ years experience behind them than paddy whatyamacallhim down the country somewhere.

After following the thread I went ahead with Constantine's map (bmworkshop.ie) the other week. BMW 218d coupe with 150bhp now sitting at around 200bhp. Paid €269. REALLY enjoying it.

I know Joe was away last week on race duty, so might be worth following up with him again.

Under no circumstances would I have a car re-mapped without a before / after dyno run, and I'd argue that the before run is more important in case it flags any potential issues with the car.

    That, I don't like "AROUND"
    So as Paddy said.
No Dyno run first to flag any potential issues. :(
Or after to show what sort of map you actually got.
    Anyhow, enjoy the extra power.

Nothing wrong with a bit of due diligence fellas.
I was happy enough with reviews Quantum Tuning had and more than happy with the feedback Constantin got from previous clients.
Also, the map is reversible if any issues were to pop up.

The car is my daily commute up and down the N11 so wasn’t looking to tear the arse out of it.
There’s a nice bitta poke on tap when I need it and it’s a much pleasurable drive on an already pleasurable experience.

    What’s the catch lads?

If someone can remap a car to get more power and be more economical then they should be given a Nobel prize.

They don't have to meet emission targets the manufacturers do.

More emissions = more fuel burned.

If you want to burn more fuel you can just use the right pedal.

Less restrictions makes for a free flowing engine which in turn lends itself to efficiency.

Catalytic converters, Dpf's and egr valves do not aid fuel efficiency.

It's really more so optimising the engine map for its environment. When a car leaves the factory, it could end up in the north pole or in the Sahara, or run on anything from 95RON to 102RON so they need to have a safe calibration on it to cope with either extreme. This compromise results in a reduction in power / efficiency but once tuned for its own environment, you can reduce a lot of that compromise. Some cars respond better than others.

Due to our low quality fuel, a lot of 'performance' cars don't even come close to making their claimed factory power figures here, but again, it varies from car to car.

There may be insurance issues after a remap.

p.s. Let's not go down the "don't disclose it" route.

What about emissions on NCT? Pay again to have it reversed beforehand then pay again to have it re-done after?

Fuel burns more efficiently after a remap so emissions can actually drop rather than rise....apparently.

Catalytic converters, Dpf's and egr valves do not aid fuel efficiency.

Correct and right. The core job for each of these is to reduce emissions.
