Water well pump

    Any body ever run a submersible water pump either 1/2 or 3/4 hp from a 12 volt to 230 volt via a pure sine wave inverter. Thinking of 2 deep cycle batteries with solar panels. Its for a piece of land away from main plot. It will also run a fencer. They will never be any more than 25 cattle at anytime. I dont want the expense of paying ESB when there is no cattle on the land ie. Nov to Mar.

    Would you not be better off with a 12V pump? The inverter is going to waste a lot of power.

    The power to drive a water pump would be way higher than an electric fence, especially if you're pu.ping up from a depth.

    Only reason I was thinking of going down the inverter root was if it didnd work out I could get in the ESB. Are 12 volt submersible pump good??

    They can be, what are your requirements?
    Pump from river or well?
    Work off pressure switch with a standard ballcock type drinker?
    Modify drinker with micro float switch?
    Fill a header tank like an IBC ?

    +1 I had a leak in a submersible pump 3/4hp one time and the esb bill sky rocketed, 12 volt wouldn't have a hope.

    How far down the well is the water. How much of a lift from pumphouse to highest trough?

    Use a 12V pump regularly here to fill an IBC, takes about 20min to fill. The OP is feeding 20 cattle so assuming no leaks the pump needs to run for less than an hour a week so it could be done. If he uses an IBC as a header he will see in plenty of time if there is a breakdown or if battery needs a top-up from mains charger.

    There are commercially available solar pump systems that will run multiple drinkers and power an electric fence.

    Another option if using an IBC is just power the pump a few min every day or every other day from car/Jeep/tractor when checking the cattle.

    If your going to run from battery stick to dc current.
    Keep it as simple as you can.
    Using a marine sump pump used in the bottom of a boat, it can run dry and self prime.

    You could use the solar panel charge controller to run the pump for an hour or more after sunset most of the cheap pwm solar charge controllers have this. Can fill an IBC and have an over flow pipe back into the well or where ever. Plus if battery is to low wont run it down further.
    A pressure switch used in caravans and RV water systems could be used as another option.
    These are all of the shelf items easy to replace if need be.
