return of online purchase damaged in transit

I had an issue with an item purchased on-line and it was within warranty.
I got in touch and they agreed to take it back and fix it. I packaged it up and
returned it, by courier arranged by the vendor, and was informed today that
there was damage during transit to the item and that whilst they would attend
to the original issue the new damage wouldn't be covered. I'm a little surprised
to say the least and having looked at the pictures sent to me I can see that this
damage could be rectified (maybe not 100% but significantly) at a cost of
about €30 which is approximately 1/10 of the value of the item. Just wondering
    where do I stand? TIA

The return should be fully insured, especially seeing as it was arranged by the vendor. In that case, you should be sent back a fully repaired product, original issue and damage. If they won't, then seek an alternative arrangement like credit card chargeback.

Three months left in warranty of two years though. Thanks

Yes, completely agree, the vendor should claim from the courier for the full amount.
