After a successful morning of raids across the Dublin and kildare area, can someone explain to me why someone who is known to the gardai and has criminal convictions, is arrested during one of these raids but released without charge?

Surely they had information to arrest said person in the first place and these raids are pre planned and investigated to know end so how would someone during this be arrested and released?

    What's the point?

Waiting on directions from the DPP. Happens all the time.

Depending on the crimes they are suspected of the Gardai may need a direction from the DPP before they can charge the suspect. This takes time as they need to prepare a case to present to the DPP.

The DPP review and come back with a decision to charge or not. The suspect will be re-arrested and charged with the crime. As they haven't even been charged then they can't be held while the DPP is making their decision.

Common enough, but there should be a regulation that suspects need to surrender their passports pro tem.

But of course that would hamper their civil rights. Scratch that so.

Doesn't matter as they'll be released on suspended sentences once charged so they'll be back out soon either way.

    Jaysus. That's a bit much.

People can be suspects for all kinds of reasons and for any indeterminate length of time. Never mind the abuses such a regulation would be open to by AGS and even ordinary members of the public.

I presume you think Barry McCaffrey and Trevor McBirney are being treated fine by the cops up north, who suspect them of stealing documents from the police ombudsman, even though the ombudsman has insisted nothing was stolen from them.
They haven't been charged with any crime but are on police bail and cannot leave Northern Ireland.

I prefer having a few auld civil rights in this state, and not the uk system.
