State Funded Alternative Music Radio Station?

Unfortunately Mr. Donnelly probably never listens to much of Lyric's output. Other wise he would never have said this about Lyric in one of his tweets....

"It’s fair to say most would regard it as a niche station, but it’s consistent and always focused on its music offering."

Consistent and always focused on it's music offering? Really?

A gameshow host in the morning playing "My old man's a dustman" followed by Abba, followed by Bing Crosby followed by Van Morrisson.
Then gameshow host does a feature with a TV Chef. That's focused?

By all means there should be some state funding for an alternative music station but, for Gawd's sake, don't let RTE run it. Otherwise,in time, it'll end up with the likes of Will Leahy or Lottie Ryan on it playing Candi Staton because they have to find something for these people to do.

Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Donnelly. RTE have a tremendous record of facking up such worthy projects.

What about the commercial-free RTÉ 2XM? It's available online and on most digital TV platforms. Surely it would get more investment or a change of remit (news, advertising etc) if it attracted a larger audience.

Well, an alternative station with experts in their field, sure.

    Works for BBC6 Music.

I would say without mentioning it by name, JD had something along the lines of BBC 6Music in mind.

On Lyric, whenever I think of it, a picture of Marty Whelan pops into my head and I feel a bit sick.

some decent stuff on 2XM, but the quality and consistency is dreadful. I've often tuned in and there's been a repeat of a random show from several months ago (not a special or anything, just someone playing random tracks). I remember one of the hiphop shows a few months ago where they played an act, and said that they'd be at Longtiude festival next week. they had played Longitude the previous July
Dan Hegarty's show is pretty good.

Why would you need another music station?? It'd be a waste of state funds. It's not as if they are thin on the ground and anyways most people have access to vast amounts of music these days and don't need radio to listen to more of it on.

Yeah, the digital stations suffer because if the lack off paid staff, on top of limited awareness.

Ooh harsh. I wasn't a fan of him on the Phantom breakfast show he did but I did enjoy the afternoon slot he did on TXFM. In fairness to him he never claimed to be a bona fide muso(/expert) but he did come across as someone with a genuine love of and interest in music.

I love 6Music but there are a good few presenters on there that I wouldn't describe as "experts" either.

I would give the job and all the cash to 8Radio and see how they get on with it..if I had your job.

Is this the guy who stood in for Sean Moncrieff for one disastrous week a few years ago?

I wish I could see beyond that, but the wounds are still fresh.
