My pajero 2.8 engine head gasket went the other day. What is the best route to take and cheapest to fix it. Buy another engine or buy a new head? Which would the long term solution?. Any advice welcome. Thanks.

Start by making absolutely sure it is the head gasket.
    Did a mechanic tell you?
    What are the symptoms?

    Boiled red hot when towing.

    Is the head cracked?

If the 2.8s get that hot they usually crack the head.

If the head isn't cracked it might be sound to re-use as long as ya get it skimmed.

Finding a used 2.8 head could be tricky as its a problem that killed many of them off.

For an engine replacement a 2.5 might be a better choice.

Mechanic said it got so hot the head could be warped.

It'll be warped alright but it might be able to be skimmed flat again.

Would that be the cheaper option and can be sure then at least the engine is good.

Would the 2.5 fit in the 2.8?

If it can be done it'll be the cheapest and best option.

Engine Re in castlebar are very good at this and are reasonably paid.

If the head is cracked though this option will be a non runner

Would the 2.5 fit in the 2.8?

I'm near certain it can be made to fit. However I'm unsure how easy a swap it'd be.

Can a head be bought new?

Heads have ceramic inserts so not cheap or easy to get skimmed.....

Best off buying a new head to do it properly.

Where is the best place to buy a head for one of these jeeps?

Milner off road sell bare or built up heads, no experience with them personally though.

Best long term option by a mile - fit an M57 2.5 or 3.0 from a late 90s beemer.
