Is there a grace period for soon to be expired driver's licence?

    Hi guys,

License expires Friday, I have my appointment tomorrow.

Will I still be ok until my new one comes through?

    Thanks

I’m sure somebody will be along to say I’m wrong but I remember hearing that technically there is no grace period and once it expires you have no license until the new one is issued but in reality no Guard will have issuevwith it once you have proof.

You are required by law to carry your drivers license and produce it when required by a Garda, if you can’t you will be given 10 days to produce it. Like above if you have proof that you’ve applied for the replacement, MOST Gardaí should be ok with that

I'm in the same boat. I'm awaiting my replacement. Old one has expired.
On my receipt / proof of payment, it specifically states that it's not a substitute for holding a valid licence.

Not sure exactly what would happen if I was stopped (and actually asked to produce my licence), but I'm not risking it.

What's the wait time usually? And the 55 fee, can that be paid in cash or card only?

Haven’t been asked for my licence since I got it. Typical, was asked to produce a few times when driving on a learner permit .

You will have a unique licence number which they can check. There's a major difference between not ever having held a licence and not being able to produce one.

Walk in times when I went 2 weeks ago, were 2hrs +, but I'd booked in advance, so had a timeslot allocated.

I paid in cash, but they had a card machine there.

technically your insurance will be in valid as you don't have valid drivers license, so if you are in a accident you could be in big trouble

I would very much doubt it. It's not like your licence has been revoked, the document has merely expired.

Incorrect, every insurance contract has a term along the lines of holds or has held a valid licence.

And just so I know, can I pay for it with cash or debit card? Locked out of my online banking so I'll need to address that in the morning if I can't pay cash

Didn't see that reply, that's great, thanks again
