Should I go for a car or small van? Diesel vs petrol?

    Hi guys,

I am a freelance cameraman and I currently drive an 06 Fiesta which has to go unfortunately.

For my next car I am looking for get something a bit bigger, I don't need a huge amount of space, but bigger than a Fiesta anyways.

I have been back and forth on what to get, my budget is about 6k give or take. Could stretch to 8k if it were really worth it.

My initial thinking was to get something like a Civic or a Focus, as with the seats down it'll be plenty of space for the equipment I use. The 1l ecoboost Focus being a particular favourite, I rented the 1.5 diesel recently and it was a nice car. I looked into it and the ecoboost engine caught my eye as it is so cheap to insure and has decent power (120ps). I have only been driving for a year, so insurance is still a big issue, I looked at insuring a 1.6 diesel focus and it was about 400 more expensive for the year, even though it has less power than the ecoboost, makes no sense to me.

I suppose my question is, and maybe this isn't the right place for this, but is there any benefit to getting a small van, such as a Focus van or Golf van as opposed to a normal car of the same variety? Is there any tax benefits I will gain by buying a van? Are tax and insurance costs lower?

Other than that, I would love any recommendations within my budget, I would love an estate, such as an Octavia, but it seems hard to find a decent one in my budget that hasn't got a million miles on it.

The focus ecoboost seems like a good car, decent power, very cheap to insure and decent economy. I don't do huge miles, about 14k km in the 9 months I've been driving. I would consider a diesel, but do I do enough miles for it to be the better option? I potentially will have a regular gig coming up which will involve driving to Wexford and back from south Dublin once or twice a week, which would put my yearly mileage up a decent amount I'm sure.
