2014 Kia Sportage

    Hi all,

My car better half is thinking of upgrading her 2010 Megane for a 141 Sportage.

Megane has been great but access is now proving hard lifting in and out our little lad. Not enough space in the front passenger seat with him in place.

Anyway, with a 141 with 157k km and full history is there anything I should be looking out for.

Yes, gearbox trouble. Make sure the gear change is smooth in all gears with no whining noises audible. You will need to give the car a good drive to test for this - get the engine fully up to temperature.

Then, even when you do that, something in the box will fail shortly afterwards.

They say you should never buy a Kia coming into the summer season, because the chocolate they use in their gearboxes might melt on you.

They seem fantastically prone to all types of gearbox issue. I suppose an upshot of this is lots of places are good at fixing them and have recon units on the shelf.

You'd take the risk on a newer one with the 7 year warranty, but a 141 with over 150k kms is outside of warranty and no chance of goodwill.

Otherwise, not a Terrible yoke if you like them.

I would suggest a Nissan Qashqai 1.5 diesel 2013 onwards. You can't really go wrong with one of those - no major mechanical issues.

Seem very popular. I was interested in looking at a couple of ‘14’s recently and when I rang the garages advertising both were gone that day having only gone up on website

Not massively keen on them. The interior don't do much for me.

    I'm going to look at a Rav4 today but it's pricey. 2013 for €,16,5000.

They are nice, I looked at them years ago and was going to buy but none in country

Maybe it was lucky escape as the diesel engine is supposed to be causing lots of issues

I'd love one but none locally. I'm just starting looking at what is available locally first.

Never heard that before. The Dad had a 2015 Sportage and never had a single problem with it plus there is lots of them on the roads both in my area and in the country too. I don't think that would be the case if the gearbox's were that bad.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

It's definitely the case. There are so many on the road because they are priced well and look ok for what they are, that combined with their extensive warranty keeps them going. They do give a lot of gearbox trouble.

Would a Ford kuga be an option. Saw a nice 131 for about 13k. Know nothing about the car but like the compact appearance compared to some of the rest.

The Tiguan from around 2014/15? Not sure price wise are they in your range but i've seen them mentioned in a positive way around here a few times

Investigating the Kuga also. I like them in general but certain Ford seats cripple my back.

    Tiguan is a strong contender.

Any Kadjar's fall into that budget OP. Go with what you know and the finish on these generation Renaults is much better than your Megane.

Not that I have seen tbh. I'm not keen on the interior of the first Kadjar. Recent facelift has helped massively.

    .

My wife drives her Kuga when I let her. Nice car but I find it strains the back on bendy roads.

It is a common enough but not widespread problem with gearboxes made by Hyundai which Kia is a subsidiary of and uses many of it's parts. The Sportage is a nice looking car (from the front end anyway) with good road presence but I would not buy one.

Options being kept open to petrol and diesel. Hopefully find a nice spec in budget.

I’ve also been looking at a Kia Sportage in this price bracket but have seen a nice Ford Mondeo with Top Spec. Comfort is a big thing for me however are there any generic common engine, gearbox faults with these like the Kia?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭chicorytip

No, none whatsoever. The 1.6 litre diesel engine is regarded as slightly underpowered for such a large car but it's quite adequate and very economical. The 2.0 litre is better to drive.
