J11 1.5dci qashqai has thrown up an engine light with the following codes when scanned:

    P0380 - glow plug / heater circuit A malfunction

    &

P1453 Fault definition not available or manufacturer specific

Quick google of second code indicates it could be Dpf/ egr/ exhaust pressure sensor related - amongst others. Nothing specific.

Car running fine and not going into limp mode. Engine is slightly rough on cold start until it gets warm (always has been though).

Should I start at glow plugs or glow plug relay?

    Any other advice welcome

You need a better diagnostic scanner

Hi Listermint. Yes, glowplug light goes on and then off when I turn on the ignition

It is true, the glow plug code is very common when scanning certain Bosch ECUs and may not indicate a fault, it's the manufacturer specific code that needs chasing here and the scanner used is not providing enough information to do that

The glow plug light doesn't signify anything, it doesn't relate to when the glow plugs are actually on and is usually only used as a wait to start light in very very cold weather

First code - test the glow plugs, probably one or two are not working.

Second code - without an accurate description it's impossible to say for sure but there are known problems with exhaust pressure sensor pipework on these engines (note I am talking about the exhaust pressure sensor as opposed to DPF pressure sensor). The way the system works is you have a metal pipe screwed into the exhaust manifold, then a short section of rubber pipe, then the sensor. The metal pipe can get blocked with carbon preventing the sensor from reading any pressure, alternatively the rubber pipe can split, which will cause the same symptoms.

So what you need to do is first of all check if the rubber pipe is intact. Then temporarily remove the sensor from the rubber pipe and start the engine, you should hear/feel exhaust gas coming out of that pipe. If you don't then the metal pipe is blocked. Due to the shape of the metal pipe it is very difficult to unblock so replacement is usually the solution. Access to the pipe isn't great to say the least so DIY replacement with just basic tools isn't really an option.
