In fairness windows 7 was released 10 years ago its hardly surprising.

I moved to windows 10 a while ago and like it a lot. got a win7 laptop from work. I can’t wait for them to upgrade it.

Some things annoy me about it but at the same time stuff in win7 used to do the same

My sincerest commiserations. I was lucky enough to start at MSDOS 3 and AmigaDOS 1.3.

Fun times. Not as fun as trying to keep Windows ME running for more than 5 minutes, though.

My phone is a Microsoft Lumia with OS windows 7. It doesn't seem to be able to operate facebook, whatsapp, skype, nor does it allow updates. An old lady gave it to me when it was too useless for her. Haha, bet yer all jealous.

Think I better drag myself into the future soon.

Is it essential to upgrade for basic cyber security?

I tend to not like the overused word "cyber".

But yes, it you are network connected [including the internet], you should stay with a currently supported operating system.
Having updated anti virus / anti malware / anti ransomware [MS OneDrive is enough for this with file multi versioning] then even better.

    Now with actual source
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/windowsforbusiness/end-of-windows-7-support
After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7. But you can keep the good times rolling by moving to Windows 10.

have to say I hate windows 10, why does everything have to be an app now even on a PC? What was wrong with programs for god sake!?

Windows 3.1 was my first windows and before that MSDOS, don't know why but it was always exciting having to type in folder addresses to open folders and typing out the .exe file names to run programs.

    "cd\games\monkey island\monkey.exe" ahhh the memories....

    An app is a program.

Your DOS command won't work BTW.

Yes I know it's a program but I don't like the way Windows 10 has moved towards displaying programs like apps as if trying to make the OS look and behave like the OS on a phone.

Memory is sketchy on the MSDOS commands, it was just for nostalgia purposes.

    Thanks for your input.

I'm primarily a Mac user but use Windows 10 for gaming, it's actually a grand OS once you turn the privacy nonsense off...

Nope. It's all about MS having an app store and getting a cut of the loot.

However, I agree with you. It's a pointless excersize for most of us but for those who aren't technically minded, have no idea what programs or utilities are out there. A centralised source for all [and it will eventually be all with Windows] apps / programs / suites / utilities. A simple search for "movie player" will pop up relevant apps.

Since Windows 7 I've found the Start button has become completely and utterly redundant. I only ever press it when I want my brain to suffer from a sudden assault of information. It's even worse with Windows 10.

It kind of reminds me of bloated search portals from the late 90s/early 2000s before Google came along and made everything look cleaner.

I've used every version of windows, DOS prior to that. I actually don't mind Windows 10, my issue is my machine with Windows 10 is not that powerful so I need to leave it a few minutes after booting before it comes usable.

My everyday machine working machine is Windows 7 Enterprise, looks like I'll be migrating somewhere at some point soon.

Yeah it's the crap that pops up upon clicking the start button on Windows 10 that makes me recoil in horror. that and trying to find the control panel that used to be easily located from the start menu.

Just install Classic Start. It's free and makes the start button look and function like win7.

On my (Windows 10) system I just have to click on the Start button and type "c" to get Control Panel come up as the "best match". (I got rid of the search button (magnifying glass icon) as typing after clicking on Start opens a search box automativally). I also got rid any tiles for apps/programs I don't use in the Start window, made small tiles for the ones I do, reorganised and reduced the size of the window etc.

(Having said that, the slow disintegration of my last, 10-year-old, laptop had to pry Windows XP from my hands 3 years ago :p)

Yep, same here, I got it 5 days ago so I just went onto microshaft website and installed the windows 10 system just to get it out of the way. The whole update went super smooth and all my software and older software worked fine after updating the odd software program. For me it went smooth as gravy just like FG at the trough.

Then I done the same on my older windows 7 system of which was upgraded from windows vista to a fully licensed windows 7 home edition, but upgrading windows 10 on that system, it would not automatically activate  It obviously looked at the first main install and realised it was win vista so that one is non-activated, but no big deal...

All that is locked is the personalise feature and a watermark on the bottom right, but the operating system win 10 is fully functional. You can get rid of the watermark on win 10 by doing a trick in the registry, but it's not a big deal. Windows 10 is still the full package.

Google tips and tricks for windows 10, you don't need to use apps or other stuff, tweak the system as it has many ways of tweaking, get deep into it and you can have it nice the way you want, there is a lot in win 10, you can do a lot in there. Research all tips and tricks to customise for your liking. It's not a bad operating system at all when you get into the secrets of it. Powerful operating system I have to say, much more open than windows 7.

You were certainly thrown in at the deep end :pac:

I actually really like what Windows 10 on PC and tablet is becoming (there’s another big update due soon). I initially had it customised to be more similar aesthetically to Windows 7, but I actually now prefer dark mode, much easier on the eye, and as for what’s under the hood, it’s inarguably a vast improvement over Windows 7.

It’s only a pity Microsoft are no longer supporting Windows 10 mobile, I still use my Lumia 950, though not as my daily driver, would if I could though because of the integration of Windows 10 across all devices including the Xbox.

I’d agree with the other poster though about some unnecessary apps, but more related to Office than Windows - I’d love to know what bright spark thought I would want to use mobile versions of Word, Excel, etc on my laptops?

Microsoft 10 is an all-in-one OS that can be used in desktop or tablet touch screen mode. Hence the apps because apps are designed for touch screens.

Where once we had only desktops/laptops now we still have those but some of those come with touch screens. There are laptops where you can flip over the keyboard and use like a tablet and there are tablets where you can attach a keyboard and use it like a laptop. Win 10 as it is is suitable for all those devices out of the box rather than having different versions of the OS for all those different devices.

The mobile versions of office apps on your laptop are free with Win 10. MS office was never ordinarily free. One can still of course buy the full office version and use it in desktop mode. I'm sure apps that one doesn't want can be deleted.

As I say you can still use Win 10 in desktop mode just like Win 7. You don't have to use any apps. If you don't like the new Win 10 Settings app search for Control Panel in the search box and pin it to Start. It looks and works just like Win 7.
Just install Classic Start. It's free and makes the start button look and function like win7.

I find the latests version of the Win 10 Start menu to be vastly improved since it was released and there is no need to use Classic Start anymore. It can be shrunk down to the size of Win 7's Start menu size by dragging it and the search function is excellent. Right clicking on the Start icon brings up additional handy shortcuts. Quite a lot better than Win 7 start menu now I'd say.

It took MS a long time to get Win 10 right but I think it's very good now as it is. I love the look and feel of it especially the apps and I think it now makes Apples OSX look dated.

Windows updates have caused me far more problems over the years than I've ever had from viruses. I don't use Windows 7 but if I did the lack of updates wouldn't bother me in the least.

10 is excellent and it's shows when you go back and use 7 and it seems so dated.

7 is normally lauded by people who want to project the image that they know better than everyone else.

I'm another windows 10 hater. I have it on a laptop - 7 ultimate on my PC will be staying despite the lack of updates.

I also used dos then msdos on my first computers but I reckon Microsoft were close to getting it all right with XP. I haven't enjoyed any iteration since anyway.

Too much bloat and uneccessary features, though there are a couple of great PowerShell scripts to get rid of the crap.

The release schedule was desperately rushed in October and caused all sorts of issues

However PowerShell is pretty good, and the subsystem for Linux looks interesting even if a bit limited, though this is supposed to be expanded in rhe May update.

Overall performance is poor on older devices, but with 7 EOL this year, either upgrade or switch to linux

Had a bit of a faff getting 7 to upgrade to 10 back in the day but since I've upgraded I've never had any issues.
