Do middle class/rich white women ever go to jail in Ireland?

We all know that the number of men incarcerated outnumber women in every country on earth, in some a lot more. It's also true that of the women who do go to jail, a large majority are from disadvantaged areas, abusive families etc...

So, I wonder, what are the chances of you going to jail in Ireland for example if you're a white woman from a middle class/rich background. Don't think I've ever heard a case.

What about Catherine Nevin, the Black Widow as she was nicknamed (R.I.P.)? She was well-to-do and probably considered herself to be Middle class. She was also "white" Caucasian.

Maybe men commit more crime? Just maybe?

Catherine Nevin’s crime was very serious though. Ditto Sharon Collins. For lesser crimes, I suspect women would stay out of prison easier than men.

    The law abiding ones don’t.

Middle/upper class citizens are seen by the judges as from their own flock hence they are more likely to get lenient sentences for crimes no matter how small, white collar crime in particular.

I watched the Ted Bundy Netflix documentary recently. I wasn’t too impressed with it but one thing it underlined was how leniently he was frequently treated, apparently because he was well-spoken, educated and fairly handsome.

If they commit a crime yes why would they not.

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread.

However. the rich are much less likely to need to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets or to steal bread.

I was just thinking AH needed a gender related thread.

Men are more prone to criminality, and violent crimes at that, than women. Also men are stronger therefore their acts of violence are more devastating. It's a bit like how more women try to commit suicide but more men succeed.

In fairness, while Ireland absolutely does have an appalling issue with sexism in relation to sentencing, it's overshadowed by our general propensity to let people off with suspended sentences, regardless of demographic. So I'd agree with the OP that sexism in the Irish justice system (as indeed with most of the West) is a major problem, but right now it's masked by a much bigger problem in which we just don't send violent criminals to jail at all in a lot of cases.

The UK seems to be far worse. A female judge openly told a woman convicted of drunk driving that she was only sparing her a custodial sentence because she wasn't a man - I quote, "If Miss Parry was a man, there is no question it would have been straight down the stairs, because this is a shocking case of dangerous driving against a background of two previous convictions for excess alcohol."

    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-coventry-warwickshire-47914832

She's under investigation at the moment, but I'm assuming nothing will come of it. Absolutely f*cking blood-boiling stuff.

In Ireland, one's blood is more likely to be boiled by seeing some scumbag - male or female - with 200+ previous convictions doing somebody a serious and lifelong injury in a random attack, and being let off for some bullsh!t reason or other.

Most middle-class women who get jail are done for fraud, typically stealing money from their employer. The court cases are usually pretty boring, tend to involve the same old story (gambling or shopping addiction) and aren't juicy enough for a lot of newspapers and websites so they tend to go under the radar.

A woman who lived near me was jailed earlier this year for stealing €407,000 from the Credit Union she work at. She'd be a white middle class woman in her fifties!

The majority of issues we believe should be criminal are not and the ones that are aren't taken seriously. That's why Bertie, Lowry, O'Brien etc. never saw the inside of a cell because they either did nothing illegal or what they were accused of couldn't be proven and what could was excused away over time.

No. The only people who ever wind up in jail are all the would be doctors and scientists, engineers and solicitors from working class estates who keep stacks of books about Karl Marx and only wind up going astray and never realising their potential because 'the man' has it in for them.

Those people go to jail. The rest of us are all in cahoots with the judges, politicians, bankers and Gardaí who call the shots.

For this she only got 10 years (read 5 years in Irish), and notably she carried out the attack only weeks after been let go, unpunished for an attack on another woman.

And she is a howiya, not very middle class/wealthy at all. Judges seem to like her though.

Pills have a low success rate.

Men tend to chose violent methods like guns or hanging.

She put up a good fight, claiming insanity, had spent time in a mental institution and had experts arguing against each other on her behalf. It took two court hearings to bring about a conviction as the jury couldn't agree a verdict in the first hearing. Very confusing for a jury, though I fully agree with her being found Guilty. It was left up to the "Authorities" as to where she whe will be detained - prison or Central Mental Hospital Dundrum.

Would pumping male criminals full of oestrogen make them less likely to commit more crimes?

I have to ask, how the hell does anyone imagine they can steal €400k from their place of work (a banking institution no less) and not get caught?

Come on now OP - ya don't REALLY think that absolutely no middle-class white women go to jail now do you?

She did it over about eight years.
She was in charge of the dead people's accounts.
She used take money out of one and then when that needed to given to the family she'd steel from another and she kept everything covered up.

Show on one of the Sat channels other day (Really/TrueCrime perhaps).

High-flying, very well-to-do, white Phara lady from Dublin/Newry (owned multiple houses) did unspeakable things to her elderly neighbour with a large crucifix.
Cool as a cucumber when charged, zero emotion. Even tried to appeal the 20?(+)yr sentance several times (all rejected outright).

Her husband, and other neighbours admitted she would usually go a 'loco, loco mucho loco' after a few bottles of the vodka.

Are you suggesting women can’t fire guns? I’m confused by your logic.
