Hi going looking at both these tomorrow (both older cars I know 04 and 05) the leon is 1.9tdi and the avensis is the 2.0 d4d model . Which of the 2 would be better as there around the same price . Insurance and nct is sorted to no need to worry about that:)

From a simple view the Leon comes in hatchback form whereas the Avensis comes in a saloon & hatchback form. The avensis would be a bigger and roomier than the seat too.
Either of them would be reasonably reliable would think. A bit like many modern diesels both like to have flywheels and clutches replaced. The flywheel on my 06 avensis gave up about 3 weeks ago, I didn't cop it was failing at the time. Its about 950 euro to replace flywheel and clutch. The car had 197K miles on it.
Dip the clutch and see if the engine noise changes, feel for vibration on tickover are some signs.
