So did serviced car on weekend, went to double-check oil level before closing bonnet, dipstick appeared to be snapped at "max" mark - it was fine just minute ago, plastic POS.

I am guessing this would be NCT failure (due this week).

Do i need to be concerned about end of it sitting in the engine?

Order a new one from the motor factors.
I'd say the broken piece is sitting on the bottom of the sump.

It's old banger, Picasso with 1.6 HDi
    Replacement on order.
Broken piece is about 1.5- 2 inch long and I am not sure how deep tube goes into sump - could it be stuck in tube?
Will find out once replacement delivered.
