"Good patients don’t question authority. They don’t challenge the need for the test, the diagnosis, or the treatment. " I absolutely beg to differ. My neuro and my own gp have always actively encouraged me to ask questions and to ensure I understand anything they say/do/recommend.

"Doctors and nurses, just like parents and teachers, favor the good girl patients"Again , I reject this, as a teacher. I do my best to be objective as do my colleagues. Yes, some children are more challenging than others but we do our best NOT to "favour" any one child.

We're not talking about asking questions, we're talking about questioning authority. And let's not forget Ireland's history. Lots of people in Ireland have been patronised by doctors, nurses, teachers and the church. Of course things have improved but not many Irish doctor welcome being challenged.

You should always question authority. Unfortunately the Irish person has been largely conditioned and still is today, to be subservient to anyone in a uniform or with a title or a few letters after their name. Those are the individuals who instead of not asking should be mined of their expertise if not forthcoming with it. Individuals who on the public pay bill are entrusted to serve the public but who act like doing so is doing us a favor.. if anything it’s the other way around.

I saw it myself as I spent some duration of time in Cappagh hospital. A well renowned ( supposedly ) yet absolute a*shole of a professor (DP) was cancelling my access to the gym close to my date of discharge. Reason being my treatment had ‘finished’. I was expected to basically sit by my bed from morning till night completely ignoring how that would negatively impact my recovery physically and the negative psychological effect too. Just before discharge a further prognosis from the Mater was given where further ‘intensive’ treatment was prescribed and on receipt of this now all be it in the community my recovery has been upgraded to ‘full’ as per the prognosis.

This cretin on a hefty six figure or more salary and could not do so much as basically administer the well being of patients, his name was beyond dirt given his arrogance and lack of manners towards patients and families throughout the hospital.

His staff were afraid of him, very clearly.

And every single cent that man earns is coming from you, me and every single patient that crossed those doors.

Thanks Amantine, I did deserve better but that goes for everyone else too, it’s unlikely to have been an isolated incident given the nature of the man and the type of ‘Power’ which he wielded up there.

The fact that he can get away with it with everyone means no one is doing anything about it.

I agree, I and my Folks and OH kicked up and ultimately got the decision reversed but it was a major major eye opener as to what can go on in hospitals and how much of the folks there are super heroes but then you just need one individual with an ego and attitude problem and a cognitive impairment all of his own and your ‘care’ can go south pretty sharpish...

Well done on kicking up a storm! You do it for yourself but everyone else benefits too.
