Bubbling on paintwork - 2014 BMW 520

A friend pointed out an area of "bubbling", the only way I can describe it on the rear quarter panel of my 2014 BMW 520.
it's a series of tiny bubbles in a cluster about 6 inches square. I have the car approx 18 months, so find it hard to believe I wouldn't have noticed this previously.
Any body any idea how this might happen or how to sort it out?

    Thanks

sounds like it's been hit before and poorly fixed

I'll get some pics and post them.
Costly to fix something like this (ballpark)?

Yes, that's what I'd think here.

OP it's rust, yes it would be relatively costly to fix properly. Surprising on such a new car really.

I'd be nearly 100% saying it's been repaired poorly before. Modern BMW'S are very good for rust in my experience bar where they have been painted before.

    Pictures attached.
One is the bubbling in question and the other is from an area on the back bumper which was flaking when I got the car approx 18 months ago but is now slightly worse, just including for info.

Looks like a really really poor/cheap respray job on that bumper/quarter panel
Probably looking at €500-600 to get both panels repaired properly this time...

How did u not notice that .

Looks like a poor repair job.

You're best bet is to find an indy who will do a good job. It'll be slow to sell with that damage.

I expected to see the issue with the doors edges rusting on F10 as a result of Galvanic corrosion, which is very common on F10's, but that looks like woeful repair that is just coming undone.

Yeah, poor paint adhesion from a previous repair. May have reacted with something recently though that provoked it into lifting but that's neither here nor there really.

It looks like a badly fitted vinyl wrap!!!

That's not rust, that's moisture, it looks like it was primered and then left in the damp to absorb moisture and then painted over without drying.
It's not as expensive to repair as rust but it will still have to be stripped down.

Did you buy private or from a dealer? If from a dealer, you might be able to push back to have them pick up at least part of the bill.

Good luck with that 18mths after buying it.

it's like very large micro blisters. Almost perfect square, needs professional attention to strip back and repaint.

I can't imagine what kind of animal did such a repair job to what was a 3 year old bmw at the date of purchase.
That paint looks shocking anyway and I'm amazed you didn't see that on the bumper.
I'd suggest you have a second opinion on any future purchase.
I'm guessing this looked well priced at the time and wasn't from a bmw dealer.
I'd be checking every detail of its history even at this stage.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.
The bubbling was not present on the car when purchased and has only appeared now, 18 months after purchase.

There was a small area of paint chipping on the rear bumper and looking back on pictures now, it has actually gotten a lot worse since purchase.

I bought the car from a large enough, what seemed a reputable dealer in the UK (not a main BMW dealer).
I invested in a full AA inspection, they did not find anything wrong the paintwork, apart from the very small spot on the rear bumper, mentioned above, which I was willing to live with.
Obviously nothing in the service history showed this work had been carried out.

Anyway, have a price to fix and waiting on another, so not the end of the world, just don't understand how the bubbling only appeared now!

Can anybody give a recommendation on someone to carry out this work in Dublin west?
Handy to have a place that could either hire a replacement car for the day or with a car hire place nearby
    Pics attached earlier in thread.
