    Hi
I spotted the above and am wondering if that 1.8 is still a bad engine/oil burner etc by 2009 or did they fix on later cars?
    Thanks

Tax is 750 on them. I don’t think you’d see many 2009 old model 1.8s
I think the oil burning was largely sorted by 2006?

Cheers. I spotted a 2 litre petrol in the north, I'm guessing there fine?

I’ve only ever driven the 2.0 petrol once and it was meh. Quite noisy compared to the 1.8. They’re direct injection too so may have the coking up issues a lot of GDI engines had.

Watch the Co2 emissions, none of the petrol Avensis old models were particularly good in that respect so an 09 could have mega tax.

I cannot see it being viable to import a 2.0 litre petrol Mk2 Avensis, the VRT will probably be at least half it's market value.

Cheers folks for all the info, just looking for a reliable petrol estate 35 mpg, not worried about the tax once it's under 800 budget is 3.5k. I'd like to get 3 years out of it.
Am I missing any other cars?

    Accord petrol estate?

Ya that could be an option, are they any better than the Avensis tho?

Depends on what your criteria for a good car are.

Even when they burn oil it's not that big a deal, they'll still pass NCTs no bother, you just need to remember to keep checking it and topping it up, they don't have a sensor to tell you they're low on oil so you do need to check regularly. Ours has burned oil for years and still breezes through them, 212k miles up on it now.

The 1.8 is not fast but would be a better bet than the 2.0 for reliability IMO, will be more tax friendly although still on the high side if it's after 2008.

Comfortable, reliable, cruise on the motorway when I go to the UK. Cheers

In that case it would be better than the Avensis.

Will be hard to find a late shape Accord estate especially in petrol for 3.5k. You might find a Saab 9-3 or Volvo V70 but they will have higher running costs than an Avensis.

Mazda 6 might be another option but again rare to find in petrol estate.

A bit chancery but it's normally the diesel Insignias that are best avoided so not sure a petrol one comes with the same reliability issues:

4k seems a bit strong though, closer to 3k would be more like it.

That’s the Aura spec, which is the most basic Irish model.

If it’s up against an 03 shape Avensis, surely the old shape Accord would be ok

True but I'd say you will be going back pre 2008 for a petrol one.

Don't worry about the oil burning. I've the even older 1.8vvti (2002) Avensis and keep an eye on the oil and top up every few months. (155K miles on the clock and counting). I've looked after it over the years and it breezes through the NCT.
Only have 2 issues with it
Car tax is a killer (650/year)
Engine noise increases quite a bit above 3000rpm which is approx 65mph so it's not the best at motorway speeds
