Question on damage to a Land Rover

    Hi ,
Just had my door get caught by the wind and swing into the front of a land rover in car park. Left some paint on the bumper. I took some pics (to cover myself) and left a note with my phone number on it so owner can ring me
Looking at pic damage is worse than I thought, anyone have a rough idea what this could end up costing?

Bumper respray will probably cost around 250ish, may need to be filled and sanded out depending on how deep the scratches are so could cost a bit more.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the damage looks to have been due to two different events.

If it was two events, and I'm gonna get abuse for this, but... I certainly wouldn't be paying the full cost of a respray.

Yeah I can’t tell if some of that damage was there before. Will wait and see what the owner has to say , haven’t got a call yet

The previous damage may have been caused by the owner themselves and they didn't want to fork out for it out of their pocket or by someone in a car park who wasn't as honest as the OP. Unfortunately that's irrelevant to you as nobody is going to agree to a respray of the section you only damaged. The entire bumper needs to be resprayed either way imo to get it to match the rest of the car whether there was previous damage to the bumper or not.

Fair play OP. Somebody once let a door swing into a rental on I had on a windy day and I got stuck for €900. Even if you end up paying a few hundred, you will sleep easily and your honesty will be appreciated by the other owner.

Hope the owner is sound enough not to rip you off as you owned up to the damage. My wife has had damage to her car last week but no note and boot door with two nice marks and big enough dent high up over bumper. 250 and up would be the cost in most body shops but its up to the owner where they want to repair it.

The OP is only responsible to have it returned to the state it was in before his damage. If it was already scratched up then it is not reasonable for the full expense of returning the car to showroom condition is laid at the second person to damage it.

If it was me I would be paying for 50% of a reasonable repair cost (not a main-dealer mark-up) at most.

That is assuming it is only the dark colour damage the OP has caused with the scratches being previous.

Good luck proving who did what percentage of damage and what state it was prior to that.

If I was reasonably sure it was damaged previously my response to that sort of attitude would be go pay for a solicitor, file a complaint, wait years and see what the judge says.

A person owning up to doing damage and making a reasonable offer would have a lot of credibility in that situation.

Lol. Yes because paying a solicitor to act on your behalf and take the time and effort to bring this challenge to court is going to work out way cheaper than just paying for the entire bumper to be resprayed. Maybe the solicitor can fight to reduce the liability even further by excluding stone chips or whirl marks on the paintwork prior to the OP damaging the bumper too? I suppose the Land Rover owner's solicitor could also counter claim for car rental while the car is in for repair, etc if we want to go down the silly route.

What does the other corner look like? If it's scratched like that corner then 50% would be a good compromise, if it's pristine then you're probably looking at a careful owner and they'd likely want the full cost.

Then the other person just goes to their insurance and you end up paying full price and taking a hit on your insurance for 5 years. Well worth it for €300.

There’s no solicitor discussion over a claim for less than€500. The OP’s insurer will receive a claim, the OP will acknowledge that he did at least some of the damage and the insurer will settle it as any other charges grew of action would be more costly.
