Emigrating and need someone to sell my car

    Hi all,

I'm emigrating for a while and need to sell my car. I won't have time to sell it privately before I leave and the quotes I've gotten from dealers are thousands below what I think it's worth.

I'm in no rush to sell it so I'm wondering is there a service that sells your car for you for a commission, say 5% or something? I could leave it with them and they can take their time to sell it for a good price. I've been searching online but can't really find anything. Maybe it's something some dealers offer but don't advertise?

I'm in Dublin if that makes a difference. Any advice greatly appreciated!

Some dealers will sell a car on behalf of a well known customer or family member but generally they don't do it.

Also I wouldn't be comfortable handing my car over to a completed stranger I don't know to sell. What's to say they sell the car for more than they tell you and pocket the difference? Best thing to do is get either a relative or friend to sell it for you. The other alternative is to put it through an auction but expect to lose more than 5% of the selling price through auction house fees, etc.

What kind of car are we talking? How old, roughly what is it worth? Would be one approach for a €1k runaround and completely other for €25k 2 year old car.

The car is only a couple years old and similar ones are listed at €40k+.

Very hard to sell a car of that value privately irrespective of who you pay to sell it for you. While you will lose a bit more selling it to a dealer, it might be the easiest and quickest way to shift it.

40k+ is bring to dealership territory I'm afraid. No other option I can think of. Maybe play a few off each other.

You won't find a private buyer willing to hand over that kind of cash for "sold as seen".
The only option I can think of is selling it to a dealer and take the hit.
Or store it until you get back, quite costly.

Is there much manufacturers warranty left on it?
    Main dealer service history?
    Low kms.

If someone in your family is a good customer in a garage, ie. buying new cars on a regular basis, they may be able to get them to sell it for you.

There is almost 3 years manufacturer's warranty left, dealer service history and 10k km per year on it.

Thanks for all the replies so far. It sounds like I may have to take the hit although storage is also an interesting option.

It'll depreciate massively each year. You'd be better off selling and buying one back like it when you get back.

It sounds like a good buy for someone but as others have said anything in that price range is hard to sell privately.
Anything up to a year I'd chance storing it.
The only way I can see you getting a decent price is selling to friends or family who will know the car is genuine.

Ship the car to wherever you are emigrating to.

    Or drive it if possible.

What type of quotes were the dealers giving you?

I am in a similar position, but not quite that high in value.
