Money deducted from pay for nothing

A friend worked in a job for ten years and has just retired. He was given to understand that a small sum of money deducted weekly from his wages was in the nature of a savings fund which would be given back to him on retirement. This was not laid down in writing. The sum actually amounts to a few thousand euros. He has now been told that it was to cover uniforms. He has just had a few items of uniform, carefully maintained over the years. It seems that he has paid over a lot of money for nothing. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

What did it say on his payslip?

The term on the payslip is Starter Pack

He enquired about the deduction when it began and was told that he would get it back on retirement. He didn't think any more about it. A number of co-workers opted out and still were issued with uniforms.

Any idea how much per week was being taken?

It was only five euros but over time that is a tidy sum.

“Starter pack” would sound much more like uniforms than it would some sort of undocumented savings scheme.

Surely a 'starter pack' would just be on initial payslips?

Couldn't imagine seeing that on a payslip when close to retirement.

He should question why he’s not getting it back and how come those that opted out still got uniforms.

Problem with all this undocumented stuff is it’s a matter of opinion and heresay at this stage.

It's definitely on the payslip and there is nothing else that it could be for, All the legal deductions are in other sections-tax, usc, prsi. A bit of a mystery
