    Hi
Just been told by my mechanic the head gasket is gone in my Toyota avensis T27 09 model,
Would anyone have a rough price to fix, just after committing to a new kitchen and can't afford a major repair bill on car also

Depends on what caused it and how bad the damage is. I’d imagine it’s €500 minimum.

What engine is it? Would be a bit odd for the HG to go in one of these unless it's the 2.2 diesel.

    2L diesel

That's one of the most reliable diesel engines there is. How do you know the HG is gone? What are the symptoms? Has it never been serviced or something?

The blocks can warp on those engines. It's a big job to do a warped block and would be cheaper to put a used engine in if that was the case.

There is a Toyota Service Bulletin on headgasket issues on the T250 model Avensis.

There was a goodwill campaign by Toyota at the time... I think cars under 7 or 8 years old with less than 110k miles Toyota would cover them... new short block etc

The engine started overheating, pulled over cooled it down and noticed no coolant in it, drove to nearby station got a bottle of coolant and put it in.
The next day I booked it in for mechanic to look at it and then drove to work with it. Coming through port tunnel again engine overheated got out of port tunnel pulled over and could see coolant was empty again and had leaked out all over engine.
Mechanic straight away said head gasket was gone, didn't drive it again and then mechanic picked it up today. Checked it out and again confirmed head gasket after inspection, said he has two cars ahead of mine but will get a look at stripping and seeing full price once he has the other two done.

Not really, they're troublesome enough, not that nice to work on either.

Ah fair enough so, the fact that it overheated could easily have cooked the head gasket alright!

    Best solution all round.

This should be approached with caution, if the mechanic is not familiar with these engines he may think its a simple job of remove head and skim and refit but that has a very low success rate on the 2.0 and 2.2.

It should be said that the earlier 2.0 D4D up to 06 had an iron block. The newer engine 06 on has an alloy block. Much softer.

+1 for that answer. 90% of the time the engine is for the bin.

So as the original Poster I taught I would update you all. Mechanic confirmed its the head gasket that's gone, the rad will need replacing also as that's where the leak was coming from.
Repair cost at mate rate 1800 parts, rebuild labour.
I've opted for a second hand 4 injector engine and rad which I sourced for 700. 50 quid delivery.
250 to fit the engine in labour. So €1k all in. I've had to scale back the kitchen refub but hopefully motoring by next week
