New job and social welfare

Im currently on casual/part time workers as im a substitute teacher. The job im in is 9 - 3 everyday I work - I dont work everyday, the school calls me when they need me to come in. Currently my social welfare is docked 60 euro for everyday I work.

I have recently been contacted about a teaching role in an area that I am dying to get into, the job is much more stable in terms of consistent hours compared to my current role which is unpredictable - I dont know from one week to the next if I will be working.
The problem with this new role is that its only 2 hours - 4 hours a week and ill be paid monthly. these hours are also spread across different days so ill be technically working these days meaning I will be down on my dockets as a days work even though ill only be doing about 2 hours so ill be docked a day from my dole - more than id actually be earning with the job. The job is also out side town, the buses in my area are quite expensive and will probably cost me 15 euro return.

I dont want to turn down this job, my current sub role is very unpredictable and I will have no work over the summer, I will still be available on other days to work in this other school but chances of them contacting me this time of year are slim.

Really not sure what to do, I really want to work these hours as the job is in the area I want to work in and the more experience I get the better it will be long term in regards to career prospects but taking it could mean I will be in real financial difficulty.

    Any help?

Assuming you're on Jobseekers Allowance which is means tested.

The €60 per day you get docked is based on your wages and because you're working long(ish) hours the pay is high(ish).

Working less hours = less pay and this will be reflected in a lower deduction.

You need to pop into your local office and explain your dilemma.

Is this a teaching job? You need to go in and be honest with the principal and ask him what the chances are of sub work on top of those hours is and explain that you simply can’t take it without some other hours. You also need to find out what the odds on the job coming up to full time hours are

If it’s an in demand subject then he’s likely to try and facilitate. If not then at least you know

You may be able to take part in the part time job incentive scheme. This allows you to work for less than 24 hrs per week and get a weekly payment. This scheme suits people like yourself where their part time hours are spread over a number of days.
