If it meets it it meets it. Kast is a market-uppey brand for mick garage, they just repackage lowest-bidder parts. Oil is pretty clear cut though, it either meets the standard or it doesn’t.

Isn't there an issue re oils where anyone can say there oil is to such a spec but the known brands will be approved by the manufacturer to meet the spec.

To refresh, car is: 2006 523i. N52 6 Cylinder engine.

I currently use 5w30 ll04 and uses a litre every 2000 miles. Has been for last few years. Seems to be a thing with these engines. I only do 4000 miles a year.

Would changing to 5w 40 (with bmw ll04 etc) help it stop using so much oil?

Ive been advised in the past to very specifically use BMW LL04 oil.

This is is the oil I have been using: Total Quartz INEO MC3 5W / 30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil BMW-LL04.

Some people suggest to use 0W / 40 which is LL01.

So confused, should I be using:

    5W / 30 and BMW LL04

    OR

    5W / 40 and BMW LL04

    OR

    0W / 40 and BMW LL01

Any thoughts welcome. Just looking on the oil that is best for the car. And to possibly stop the car consuming so much oil.

Try the 5w40 as we are getting into warmer months now & see if it reduces your oil usage.

I mainly use Liquimoly oil on my BMW. It's a German oil that's TUV approved & very well respected.
Not many places stock it though. If around Dublin, then Finglas Auto Parts does stock it.

Other than that, if Castrol or Mobil are on sale then i will go with those for the price reduction.
Also, Halfords stocks Petronas Syntium. It's a well respected brand that develops for the Mercedes F1 team.

Generally i tend to stick with well known brands such as Liquimoly, Catrol, Mobil, Petronas rather than the unknown ones.

LL04 isn't a must have for your engine.

Thanks. So currently the car has 5w 30. And not due an oil change for another while. But I need to top up with 1 litre.

Is it ok to throw a litre of 5w40 in on top of 5w30?

Yes. You are only altering the viscosity very slightly.
Although i would tend to stick with the same brand as you originally filled

Thanks all. Still confused. So of these 3, which one should I use:

    5W / 30 and BMW LL04

    OR

    5W / 40 and BMW LL04

    OR

    0W / 40 and BMW LL01

    5w30 ll04 to top up.

Then at next full change try 5w40 LL01 or LL04

Whatever you choose it won’t fix your oil consumption. It is a feature of those engines after about 100k km.

What will changing to 5w 40 offer me? Potentially last longer?

    hi

    have a 2006 bmw 523i automatic.

what do people think of this oil for it:

    https://www.micksgarage.com/d/engine-oils-and-lubricants/products/3086185/kast-5w30-fully-synthetic-c3-engine-oil-1-litre

meets all the requirements etc, so why not? or is this foolish?

LL-04 are fine, but for your car LL-01 would be even better.

LL-04 spec was introduced when DPF started to pop up. It has much smaller contents of sulfate and phosphate ashes to protect exhaust after treatment system. But it comes at a price of worse cleaning capabilities. LL-04 is still a very good spec and was allowed in petrol motors to simplify servicing regimes, but if the engine can take LL-01 oil, it is a better option.

You mentioned losing oil. The higher viscosity oil may reduce this.
You won't know until you try it at least once.

In this age the xWxx specification is virtually useless. Ignore it and focus more on the manufacturer approval.

By manufacturer approval, what do you mean? 5w30 or whatever?

what is the cause of this high oil usage issue?
