They will give you nothing for it as it is worthless to them, unless you are using it as part of a scrappage scheme to buy a brand new car.

Best sell it yourself on donedeal.

    It's worth near nothing....

Dealers as said above would only accept on scrappage as it's end of life and an undesirable car.

is scrappage deals only available on new cars?

Yes if any such deals out there.

You may get a trade in but don't expect much.
This would be on 2nd or new and depends on dealer.

Scrappage against a new car is just another term for discount from the manufacturer. Scrappage against a used car is another term for dealer discount. If you walked in with no trade-in then chances are you would negotiate the same or better deal as the scrappage deal on a used car.

Reality is a 15 year old car outside of these new car scrappage schemes is even more of a pain for dealer than it for you OP. They will give you nothing for it as it costs them time and effort having to get rid of it.

my insurance is finishing end of april, nct is due 13th may.
what are my options to get rid of the car?
is it workmy while putting car through nct.
my girldfreind has a car so thats why i am looking to get rid of mine.
    We don't need 2 cars!

Assuming you just want to sell straight?

If you move fast you still have time to chance the NCT before the insurance runs out.
Bear in mind that if it fails you will need time to fix it and go for re-test.
Even a fail sheet with nothing too serious will make it easier to sell.

It's a lot of bother for little return as the car isn't worth much anyway as others have said.

if it passes the nct,can i still sell the car after my insurance runs out?how does that work?

You can still sell it after your insurance has run out alright, you just can’t drive it anywhere obviously and many potential buyers probably won’t be covered to test drive it (many open drive policies stipulate that the other car must be insured by the owner).

To be honest as it sits it’s worth about €250, and with a test not much more; maybe €500. Selling older cars is a bit of a chore these days. You’ll have all sorts ringing and texting you offering pennies for it, as well as complaining it’s too old and what not. You have to be comfortable inviting strangers to your home too, or meeting them in carparks etc. If you really need the cash then go for it if course, but I’d advise just selling it as is for a few hundred.

Price it right and it'll move.
Last year I got rid of a 2003 206 with 190k miles on it, a leaky fuel pump (had a spare from the breakers in the boot but not fitted), and a very mucky cooling system, head may have been on the way out, or me topping up with tap water now and then had started to rust the rad. It wasn't overheating but the coolant was black soup. Coil pack was also on the way out, again I had a spare, not fitted.
I listed all of these in the ad along with lots of good pictures, had it listed for 350, had a few chancers calling, but the first fella who actually came to see it offered 300 and drove it away. Some auld buck who wanted to use it on the farm because it had a tow bar!! Or so the story goes...

I got rid less than a week after posting the ad. Yes I was lucky, but chances are you will get rid if its up for under 400.

http://www.scrapmycar.ie/ is offering 125euro for my car!
    Not much money really.

then again better than no money.
is it worth my while taking it to garage to see if there is any issues with car for a free nct check?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The best pre NCT check is the NCT test itself. These "free" NCT checks are not actually free. They make money from getting you to agree to work that they think/guess will be needed to pass the NCT.

Honestly just send it through the NCT as it is. If it passes then happy days and then stick it up on donedeal for €500 and accept the closest offer. If it doesn't pass then just get rid of it for the €125 or whatever you can get for it. Spending money on it outside of the cost of the NCT is just dead money imo.

That's a fair offer for it, actually.

I was selling a 2007 Almera for a family member last year. It had a new NCT and even 5 or 6 months tax on it, nice tidy car, service history and low owners. Had it advertised for €750 and it took literally months to sell and I had to give it away.

They are fairly worthless even in good shape, unfortunately.

Get the NCT then put it on Donedeal asking €500 and take the closest you get.

You will have no trouble finding a buyer for a good Almera with a new NCT. If no major repairs are required get it tested and then advertise it on Done Deal. Don’t dream of just scrapping it. It's certainly worth more than a hundred quid.

do they check tax and insurance for nct?
my insurance runs out on 29th april

    No

Seems like a lot of hassle for very little return. What are you hoping to make off it?

The OP could get lucky but there is the giving away of them on donedeal.

You will need it to be insured if you intend to have it driven to the NCT centre.

And when they come to collect it theyll find something major wrong with it and offer you €50 cash money on the spot, boss.

Most of them seem overpriced. Four hundred or so would be a realistic asking price for a 04 model.
