Clipped wing mirrors

    Hi there,

A bit worried about a recent situation - driving on country road and meet three cars oncoming. Slowed down and pulled over as far as possible to allow them to pass. The first and third car passed as normal but the second car clipped my wing mirror (it snapped in but no major damage car a crack and a chip off the cover).

I kept on driving however as I assumed both mirrors just popped in as it was a new enough VW polo/golf I think. Looking back I realise I probably should have stopped/checked if he stopped in case his mirror suffered greater damage. Should I report this to guards/insurance or am I overthinking/working too much?

I would ask what on earth could a guard or your insurance company do with the information in this post, did you get their reg? :D

The other driver may have got the OP's registration and the Garda is looking for them.

    No

    Yes

Probably both mirrors snapped in, both at fault, equal responsibility and equal minimal damage. Sounds like the other car didn't stop either. Forget about it.

That's what I am a bit worried about. They could report me for failing to stop or claim it was my fault?

I wonder if some chap didn't happen to jot down how sinful it was to be gay 2k years ago, if we would still find a way to demonize it

    That's true.
This same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. My car was only 3 months old. On a narrow road I stopped but the oncoming car clipped my mirror and made bits of it. I jumped out of the car. The other car stopped momentarily (some distance away) but then drove on. I was furious but could do nothing.

The obligation to stop only applies where damage has been caused. Where there is no damage, there is no obligation to stop.

If you can show good reason why you genuinely believed there was no damage (i e. your car is fine), its unlikely a prosecution could ever succeed.

In the event that he got your reg, a Garda will call to you, he *might* caution you at worst and will then take your contact details so you and the other driver can sort it out between yourselves.

    You're overthinking this.

Were you 'stopped' at the time? If so, the car hit you, and they are at fault.
The fact that one and three got past without incident shows that you had left ample room, nothing to worry about I'd say.....

Wasn't stopped but was going a lot slower than the the cars passing me...
