Looking to buy a second hand car.
Are these motor check sites worth a go?
    What do to think?

Yes, but I would only use them for a car I was about to actually buy.

There is a wealth of free information out there too which can help you:

weed out traders posing as private sellers, or a car that’s changed hands recently on the Cornmarket insurance website. Enter your reg and it tells you when it changed ownership last.

Motorrax.ie will tell you if it’s changed ownership or has been bought by a dealer in the last 3 months (vehicle transaction query)

Motortax.ie will tell you the correct tax rate by entering the reg in the rates section

Carsireland.ie will tell you info like tax/NCT, number of owners, just go to the “sell your car” section and enter the reg number.

If the car is on dontedeal.ie you can verify that seller actually has the logbook by seeing if “Greenlight” has been verified. This is very useful for avoiding cloned cars, or just messers, it is not 100% foolproof as they can still enter the reg and logbook number of a different similar car if they have it.

My rule of thumb is if you’re about take a long trip to see a car then it’s worth doing a check if just to rule it out.

There’s a very good guide to buying a car in the “buying and selling” forum. Stick any prospective cars on this thread here and somebody might spot something you don’t.

Mate of mine in the trade swears by motorcheck.ie and says they do deals for checking 3 regs, €30 for 3 checks for public (not trade)...... don’t know much about the others tbh
